Coroner Rules Cassius Newton and Aran Martinson Died in 40C Desert Hike

Cassius Newton and Aran Martinson died after setting out on a fatal desert hike in the United Arab Emirates on July 18. An inquest at Essex Coroner’s Court ruled the deaths of the two friends, both residents of Ras Al Khaimah, were the result of misadventure during extreme heat.

Fatal Hike in Wadi Naqab

Cassius Newton, 34, and his friend Aran Martinson, a father of three from Bishop’s Stortford, set off for a hike in the mountainous region of Wadi Naqab at approximately 07:00 local time (04:00 BST) on July 18. Both men lived in the luxury resort of Ras Al Khaimah and were employed by the same global company, according to testimony heard at Essex Coroner’s Court.

Rescue teams discovered their bodies later that day, between 3km and 4km (1.8 miles and 2.5 miles) from their parked vehicle. The men were found lying on their backs surrounded by large rocks, positioned 350m (1,148ft) apart. They were transported to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where they were pronounced dead.

Coroner’s Ruling on Misadventure

Area coroner Michelle Brown ruled that the deaths were caused by severe rising body temperatures leading to organ failure. While an earlier hearing suggested temperatures reached 50C (122F), Brown stated during the inquest that the ambient temperature was 40C (104F), with the heat index feeling significantly higher within the canyons.

“This was an intentional trip with unintended consequences.”

Brown described the route as a recreational hike that did not require specialized equipment and was expected to take four hours. She noted that Newton had ignored his wife’s specific requests to avoid the excursion. During the inquest, the court heard that Newton had been out the previous night and likely lacked sufficient sleep, and his wife expressed concern that he had not adequately charged his phone before departure.

Communication During the Excursion

The timeline of the tragedy was reconstructed through messages sent between the men and their families. Newton had called his wife at 02:00 to inform her of the plan, during which time she asked him not to proceed due to the extreme heat. Later that morning, at 09:26, Martinson’s wife sent a text message to her husband stating, You must be cooking. When she had not heard back five hours later, she sent a follow-up message: [You are] actually trying to tip me over the edge I swear.

Search and rescue operations were initiated after the wives of both men contacted authorities when they failed to return. Cassius Newton, originally from Poole, was the son of former Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton, who flew to the UAE to identify his son’s body following the incident. Chelsea Football Club previously issued a statement expressing that it was devastated to learn of the death of Newton, who had once played for the club’s academy.
