Twelve South Launches AirFly Drive to Enable Wireless CarPlay Connectivity

Twelve South has released the AirFly Drive, a $39.99 adapter designed to convert factory-wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into a wireless connection.

Twelve South Targets Older Vehicle Compatibility

For drivers who own vehicles with wired infotainment systems but lack built-in wireless connectivity, the newly launched AirFly Drive offers a hardware-based solution. Twelve South designed the adapter to bridge the gap for millions of vehicles, with support for more than 75 makes and model years dating back to 2014. The device is intended to remain permanently plugged into a vehicle’s data-capable USB port, effectively eliminating the need for drivers to tether their phones with a cable every time they start the car.

The adapter features a compact aluminum housing and includes both USB-A and USB-C support, with a USB-C adapter included in the box for vehicles with newer port standards. The product is available in black and white/silver colorways.

Device Installs Without Apps or Online Accounts

One of the primary benefits highlighted by the manufacturer is the simplicity of the installation process. Users do not need to download a companion app or manage an online account to get the system running. According to the company, the device draws power from the car’s USB port and pairing only happens once with automatic reconnection upon ignition.

Before the initial pairing, users are instructed to perform a specific step to ensure a clean connection.

Physical Button Lets Drivers Switch Between Smartphones

The AirFly Drive includes a physical button that allows drivers to switch between two paired smartphones. This feature is aimed at households or couples who share a single vehicle, as it removes the need to go through the pairing process repeatedly. Twelve South promises that the adapter typically reconnects within seconds of starting the vehicle. The unit works with the car’s existing display, buttons, and steering-wheel controls, and the company plans to provide ongoing compatibility updates.

Because the phone no longer requires a cable for the connection, the USB port can be repurposed for charging if necessary. The device is currently priced at $39.99 and is available through Amazon. This launch represents an expansion of the existing AirFly lineup, which has historically been utilized to provide wireless audio from wired-only sources like flight entertainment systems and workout equipment.

While the adapter is designed for broad compatibility, it is specifically intended for vehicles that already feature factory-installed wired CarPlay or Android Auto. By removing the need for a cable, the device aims to make daily commutes easier. The company noted that the adapter is also suitable for use in rental vehicles, allowing users to pair their phones for the duration of a trip without the need for additional configuration.
