Turkish Football Rocked by Massive Match-Fixing and Gambling Scandal

A sweeping scandal involving widespread gambling and alleged match-fixing has engulfed Turkish football, with hundreds of players and referees implicated. The crisis, which began unfolding in October, threatens to shake the foundations of the sport in the country and has already led to numerous arrests.

In October, the president of the Turkish Football Federation, Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, revealed the shocking extent of the problem during a special press conference. “In our professional leagues, 371 of the 571 active referees have betting-related accounts. As many as 152 of them still regularly bet on match results,” he stated. This revelation immediately sparked a national outcry and prompted a large-scale investigation.

Players and Clubs Implicated in the Betting Ring

The fallout from the referee scandal quickly expanded to include players. In November, reports surfaced that over a thousand professional football players were brought before the Disciplinary Committee of the Turkish Federation for alleged participation in illegal bookmaking. Prominent clubs including Galatasaray, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor were all represented among those facing scrutiny.

The investigation has not spared club officials. Authorities have made multiple arrests, including Murat Ozkaya, the president of Eyupspor, whose club roster includes Polish player Mateusz Łęgowski. Ozkaya is reportedly not the only high-ranking football administrator caught in the widening net.

High-Profile Arrests and Serious Allegations

On Friday, authorities announced a new wave of arrests connected to the scandal, with 29 individuals named on the list. Nearly half of those detained are reportedly football players. Significantly, Erden Timur, the former vice-president of Galatasaray, is also among those arrested.

According to reporting from CNN Turk, Timur faces serious accusations including tampering with sporting event results, illegal participation in bookmaking, and money laundering. These charges are based on a detailed analysis of the 44-year-old’s bank accounts.

From Football Sponsorship to Criminal Investigation

Erden Timur is a prominent entrepreneur in the Turkish real estate industry, listed by Forbes as one of the country’s wealthiest individuals, with a fortune exceeding half a billion dollars. He joined the Galatasaray leadership in 2021, resigning from his position after three years.

Timur’s company, Nef, held significant sponsorship ties to Galatasaray. For two years, the Nef logo adorned the team’s jerseys, and the company also sponsored the stadium and the basketball team, known as Galatasaray Nef. Prior to that, Nef served as a regional partner of FC Barcelona from 2017 to 2019.

The unfolding scandal represents a profound crisis for Turkish football, raising serious questions about the integrity of the game and the extent of corruption within the sport. The investigations are ongoing, and further revelations are expected as authorities continue to unravel the complex web of alleged wrongdoing.
