Jellyfish are arriving in force on the Côte d’Azur this year. According to the CNRS, their proliferation is explained by overfishing and the warming of the water. For those who dare to swim, face-to-face encounters are always painful.

In Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), on the beach of La Salis, Saturday July 29, it was 29°C in the air, and 27°C in the water in the afternoon. An ideal weather for jellyfish. This year, they land in force on the Côte d’Azur. Translucent and armed with almost invisible stinging filaments that can reach one meter, face-to-face encounters are always painful for anyone who ventures into the water. On the French coast, there are no deadly jellyfish. In a few hours, the pain disappears, but the skin may remain permanently scarred.

What to do in case of a bite?

In the event of a sting, “we clean ourselves with sea water and not fresh water, we remove the filaments if there are any left, and then people have to stay in the shade for a while”, specifies Dominique Delin, head of the nautical service of the firefighters of the Alpes-Maritimes. At the beach, there are those who brave the danger, and others who stay on the sand. If their arrival is done according to the currents, their proliferation is explained, for the CNRS, by overfishing (the fewer there are fish, the more there are jellyfish), but also by the warming of the water. Indeed, the higher the water temperature, the more plankton there are, the favorite dish of jellyfish.
