With the phrase “let’s finish the job”, this Tuesday it was confirmed that Democrat Joe Biden, at 80, made official his intention to be president of the United States again. And, if he were re-elected, he would be the oldest head of state to control the strings of this country.

Next November he will be 81 years old; in the same month of 2024 – when the elections are held – he will already be 82. And, if he wins, takes office and completes his second term, Biden would culminate his time in the White House with the age of 86 in 2028.

But, in the midst of all this, he asked Americans to support him in the electoral race, when he will surely face – again – the Republican tycoon Donald Trump.

In a video titled “Freedom”, Biden affirmed that “fighting for democracy” has been his job during the first term, for which he once again asked for the trust of the voters.

“When I ran for president four years ago, I said that we were in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are. The question we face is whether in the coming years we will have more freedom or less freedom, more rights or less, ”says Biden in the three-minute audiovisual piece that he broadcast on his networks.

“I know what I want the answer to be. This is not a time to be complacent. Therefore, I am running for re-election,” she added. The President estimated that “every generation of Americans has faced a moment in which they have had to defend democracy.”

And he warned: “This is our moment, let’s finish the job,” he said in the video that begins with images of the attack by Trump supporters on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Biden accused the most conservative Republicans, the MAGA (acronym for the Trumpist slogan “Make America Great Again,” “Let’s make America great again”), of preparing “to take those fundamental freedoms.”

For the avoidance of doubt, he portrayed them on tape. In a snapshot, Trump, 76 and his great rival in 2020, appeared with his hand on the shoulder of Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and a rising star of the 44-year-old ultraconservatives.

If the latter runs for the Republican nomination, as is widely believed he will, either man could challenge him next year. “Biden is so disconnected from reality that he believes he deserves four more years in power,” denounced the leader of the opposition, Ronna McDaniel.

Republicans reacted to Biden’s candidacy with a video in which they describe the chaos they believe will reign if he is elected: bombs on Taiwan, hordes of immigrants on the border with Mexico, looted stores…

But Biden is used to criticism from the opposition in a country that is highly divided, not only politically, but over issues of race, firearms, the right to abortion and – among others – migration.

Members of the campaign team
Vice President Kamala Harris will once again be Biden’s running mate and, for the same reason, she appeared in the video in which the search for re-election was made official. And the First Lady, Jill Biden, was ratified in the images as a key person in the President’s life. But her son Hunter Biden, whom Republicans accuse of having shady deals in Ukraine, was not seen. In addition, it was confirmed that the campaign will be directed by Julie Chávez Rodríguez, granddaughter of the union leader of Mexican origin César Chávez. This is a way of showing an inclusive and open aspiration in a country made of migrants.
