A highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film Wicked is set to feature a recognizable voice for the iconic Cowardly Lion, secured through a surprisingly direct outreach from director Jon M. Chu.
The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with Deadline, published on Thursday, October 16, that he personally contacted the actor known for voicing the beloved character, bypassing traditional casting channels. Chu simply sent a direct message on Instagram, demonstrating a willingness to take unconventional steps to assemble his cast.
A Direct Approach to a Legendary Voice
“I was like, ‘It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time,’” Chu recounted to the publication. “‘I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you.’ He was like, ‘Why the f–k not? Let’s go!’ And then we went ahead and recorded the lines.”
While remaining tight-lipped about the actor’s identity, Chu built anticipation, stating, “Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild.” This strategic teasing is designed to generate buzz and excitement among fans eager to discover who will reprise the role.
‘Wicked’ Part 2: Building on a Blockbuster Foundation
The first Wicked film, released in November 2024, achieved significant commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing adaptation of a Broadway musical in history. The film’s soundtrack also made a remarkable debut, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. This success sets high expectations for the concluding chapter of the epic saga, which arrives in theaters on November 21.
The second installment will introduce two original songs, performed by leading actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Grande’s track, titled “Girl in the Bubble,” explores themes of courage and self-discovery.
Exploring Themes of Courage and Privilege
According to Chu, “This movie had to be about the courage of someone popping their own bubble, a bubble of privilege or their bubble of safety. … How are the decisions each of them made affecting the other in their journey?” This suggests that Wicked Part 2 will delve deeper into the complexities of its characters and the consequences of their choices, building upon the narrative established in the first film.
The director’s unconventional casting approach and the promise of a familiar voice for the Cowardly Lion underscore the dedication to delivering a captivating conclusion to this beloved story.
