Moroccan craftsmanship is a key driver of the national economy which contributes 7% of GDP, employs nearly 20% of the active population, and whose exports recently crossed the billion dirham mark between 2022 and 2023 , with growth estimated at 7%, noted Mr. Akhannouch, during the opening of the 8th edition of the National Crafts Week (SNA).

He noted that the craft sector, which strengthens the country’s tourist appeal, represents nearly 10% of tourism earnings in foreign currency.

Thus, the Head of Government underlined the continued efforts of the government to structure the sector and improve the competitiveness of artisans who are involved in the transmission of their know-how, from generation to generation, in order to preserve this heritage. .

To support artisans, the government has put in place legal and regulatory texts, including framework law 50-17 on artisanal activities, the creation of the National Crafts Register which has seen the registration of more than 389,000 artisans , and the establishment of Compulsory Health Insurance which has more than 641,000 beneficiaries, he added.

He continued that the government has also strengthened its support by developing programs aimed at improving artisanal production, market knowledge and export orientation, particularly through the creation of centers of excellence for sectors such as rugs and pottery.

Certification programs and quality labels have been put in place, with more than 69 collective brands, recalled Mr. Akhannouch, noting that the government has increased by 55% the number of people enrolled in training establishments to prepare for the next generation of artisans.

The Head of Government also reiterated the firm commitment of the executive to develop the necessary mechanisms to train the next generation of artisans, to modernize the artisanal sector and to meet the various challenges such as competitiveness, digitalization , inclusion and integration of young people.

Mr. Akhannouch also welcomed the organization of the National Crafts Week which constitutes an unmissable event, bringing together all the players in the sector to consolidate achievements, promote capacities and meet challenges.

The 8th edition of the National Crafts Week, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Crafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, attracts more than 350 participants from twenty different countries, thus confirming the international appeal for Moroccan craftsmanship.

Placed under the theme “Craftsmanship, a lever of development serving the influence and protection of tangible and intangible heritage”, the SNA offers Moroccan artisans the opportunity to meet professional buyers, specifiers, architects, designers and representatives of major brands and international distribution centers through various events and activities.
