Crater opens in Rio das Antas

In the west of Santa Catarina, in the city of Rio das Antas, a crater opened on Highway SC-135 this Wednesday (29), one day after a tornado passed through the region. The municipality is facing damage resulting from the intense rain that accompanied the weather phenomenon.

The damage caused by the tornado included roof damage, damage to an orchard and the partial destruction of a shed. In total, Santa Catarina recorded six tornadoes in November alone, with other records of occurrences in different areas of the state.

The Military Highway Police (PMRv) reported that the asphalt on the highway affected by the crater gave way due to the large volume of water in the region close to Videira. SC-135 has been completely closed, and it is expected that it will only be released next week.

Faced with the damage, the city hall provided alternative routes within the municipality. However, some of these stretches do not have asphalt paving, which can cause inconvenience for drivers.

As for the tornado, the state Civil Defense analyzed images that show a funnel with organized and rotating winds, raising dust and debris around it, clearly characterizing the phenomenon. The rotation was short-lived.

Several factors, such as the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, global warming and seasonal conditions, contributed to extreme weather events in Santa Catarina. In addition to the tornadoes, the state faced a meteorological tsunami and intense periods of rain throughout November.
