October begins just like the horror month of September: Red Bull Salzburg reached its peak with the 5-0 humiliation at the summit. The runners-up suffered their heaviest Bundesliga defeat since 2008 against reigning champions Sturm Graz and were thoroughly humiliated.
The Bulls were dispatched 5-0 in the Grazer Merkur Arena, which once again shows their current crisis. After the 4-0 win in the Champions League against Brest, this was the next low point.
Sturm Graz is in charge from the start
Already in the first few minutes it became clear that the day would be nothing short of glorious for Salzburg. Despite a new starting line-up from Salzburg coach Pep Lijnders, the Bulls failed to find anything close to a path.
Malich Yalcouye opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a deflected shot – the start of a dismantling that was far from reaching its climax.
Blaswich under pressure – Dedic injured
Salzburg goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, who has already been criticized by fans in recent weeks, was unable to hold his own in Graz either. In the 30th minute he scored a great goal of his own when he directed a header from Mika Biereth, which landed on the left post, into his own goal to make it 2-0.
In addition, Amar Dedic was eliminated due to injury in the 55th minute, which made Salzburg even worse. “Yes, it’s hard to see. It was just a bad performance from all of us and I think you could see that very clearly,” summed up Amar Dedic when asked by SALZBURG24.
Salzburg have no chance in the final
Salzburg’s chain of errors did not break. A disastrous defensive mistake by Kamil Piatkowski made it 3-0 in the 51st minute. Biereth took advantage of the assist, turned unchallenged and coolly finished into the left corner. Salzburg’s defense looked completely overwhelmed and showed weaknesses that are simply unfathomable at this level.
Pep Lijnders: “Otherwise it will be a difficult season”
Lijnders drew a sobering conclusion: “We are just a shadow of ourselves. I have seen it since we qualified for the Champions League. If you only talk about tactics or the game itself today: Sturm Graz were with us in every minute of the game. them getting balls into dangerous areas far too easily, where their strikers could then act 1-on-1 against our defenders. If we don’t learn, it’s going to be a very difficult season.”
Christian Ilzer: “I had to pinch myself”
Meanwhile, Sturm Graz were playing in a frenzy. In particular, Mika Biereth, who scored a hat-trick, and Seedy Jatta, who shone as a provider, left their mark on the game. Biereth’s 4-0 goal in the 61st minute finally sealed the Bulls’ fate.
“I had to pinch myself a few times in the coaching zone. What the team did was outstanding. It was almost a perfect game and in the end an excellent performance. Internally we knew exactly where we stood. to put ourselves in a good starting position “Everything worked out for us and Salzburg had almost nothing,” summed up Sturm coach Christian Ilzer.
Clark and Glouk crashed into each other
Frustration grew on the field. In the 76th minute, Bobby Clark and Oscar Gloukh collided during a misunderstanding, which dissipated due to the intervention of Karim Konate. The players seemed lost and the structure was collapsing.
A historic victory and a bitter end
The 5-0 came after a corner from Emanuel Aiwu, who headed the final point. The result was the heaviest league win since 0:7 against Rapid Vienna on Easter Sunday 2008.
A game to forget for the Lijnders team, who have reached the lowest point of their crisis. Even the fans who had traveled with them turned their backs on the team early on in celebration, which was an unusual gesture.
Seonbuchner, Schicker asked before a big change
What this humiliation means for Red Bull Salzburg remains to be seen. The team’s current problems are obvious. Sports director Bernhard Seonbuchner announced a “big analysis” for Monday.
In the meantime, his counterpart is to be overcome. The departure of Sturm Graz sporting director Andreas Schicker to German Bundesliga club Hoffenheim is approaching. “I’m through with my conversations,” Schicker told Sky. However, Schicker and Sturm’s President, Christian Jauk, refused to enforce the case. “There is no agreement yet, discussions are ongoing,” Jauk said.
