The Spanish club’s pursuit has been aided by squad adjustments. Atlético has made progress on departures, with defender Matteo Ruggeri closing in on a move to Aston Villa and Nahuel Molina expected to join Roma. These exits create the necessary space and financial capacity for Simeone’s side to pursue Romero, whose aggressive defensive style and front-foot mentality match Atlético’s tactical identity.
North London Rivalry and Tottenham’s Defensive Overhaul
Tottenham officials made it clear that they were entirely unwilling to sell their captain to their fierce north London rivals, viewing any direct deal as a non-starter.
