Peel Police Arrest Man in $1.6 Million Cryptocurrency Investment Scam

A sophisticated cryptocurrency fraud scheme targeting Canadian residents has resulted in the arrest of a 31-year-old man, as Peel Regional Police warn of increasingly prevalent online investment scams. The alleged fraud, which unfolded in 2023, resulted in losses of over $1.6 million for two victims lured by promises of substantial returns on international cryptocurrency investments.

Rising Threat of Crypto Fraud

Authorities are observing a surge in cryptocurrency investment scams, characterized by their increasing sophistication and ability to mimic legitimate trading platforms. These schemes often originate through unsolicited messages and advertisements on social media, exploiting the growing interest in digital currencies.

According to police reports, the victims in this case were initially contacted through social media and convinced to invest in what they believed was a genuine international cryptocurrency opportunity. They were granted access to online platforms that falsely displayed significant growth in their investments, creating a deceptive illusion of profitability. Ultimately, these platforms and the reported returns proved to be entirely fictitious.

Arrest Made in Ottawa

On November 27, 2025, Peel police, working in collaboration with the Ottawa Police Service, executed a search warrant in Ottawa, leading to the arrest of Hanad Adam, a resident of Stittsville. Adam has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

“This arrest sends a clear message that we are actively investigating and prosecuting those who prey on vulnerable individuals through online fraud,” a senior official stated.

Protecting Yourself from Cryptocurrency Scams

Investigators are urging the public to exercise extreme caution when considering online cryptocurrency investments. They have outlined several key preventative measures:

  • Be skeptical of unsolicited messages or social media ads promoting crypto investments, particularly those featuring endorsements from celebrities or public figures.
  • Recognize that fraudulent crypto websites can closely resemble legitimate platforms, making identification difficult.
  • Approach any investment offer promising unusually high or guaranteed returns with significant caution.
  • Thoroughly verify the identity, reputation, and credentials of anyone offering investment advice or services.

Authorities are actively encouraging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this scheme to contact the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau at (905) 453-3311, ext. 3335. Additional resources and guidance on avoiding fraud are available through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

This case underscores the growing need for vigilance and education in the face of increasingly sophisticated online financial crimes.
