Meriden Man Convicted in Brazen Kidnapping, Robbery, and Strangulation Case

A jury found 24-year-old Addison Clegg of meriden, Connecticut, guilty on January 12th in New Britain Superior Court of multiple felonies stemming from a violent encounter initiated through a Facebook Marketplace transaction. The conviction includes charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, and first-degree strangulation, highlighting the escalating dangers associated with online marketplaces.

Facebook Marketplace transaction Turns violent

The harrowing ordeal began when Clegg arranged to meet a victim under the guise of exchanging sneakers via Facebook Marketplace. However, prosecutors revealed during the trial that clegg’s intent was far more sinister. Instead of a simple exchange, Clegg strangled the victim into unconsciousness, creating an opportunity for an accomplice to steal the victim’s legally registered 9mm handgun and vehicle.

This daring act, however, came at a important cost, resulting in a broken foot and othre serious injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact date of the incident.

Law Enforcement and Prosecution praise Victim’s Bravery

Senior assistant State’s attorney David Clifton and Inspector Edward Apicella, who led the prosecution, lauded the victim’s actions. “The victim’s courage cannot be understated,” they stated.”But for his quick thinking under terrifying conditions, allowing him to escape from his abductors, who knows how this violent encounter would have ended?”

State’s Attorney Christian Watson also extended gratitude to the Rocky Hill and Middletown police departments for their diligent inquiry. Specifically, Detectives Patrick Lehane and Thomas Ganley, along with Officer Brandon Caires, were recognized for their contributions. Watson further acknowledged the critical medical intervention provided by Hartford Hospital staff and the professional analysis conducted by the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public protection’s Division of Scientific Services.
