The governments of Cuba and China inaugurated the International Research Institute on Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to the state agency Prensa Latina (PL).

Visiting the Asian country, the island’s Minister of Higher Education (MES), Walter Baluja, presided over the opening of the place that has the leadership of the University of Camagüey and other academic centers of the two countries and that “expands today to new areas of scientific-technical collaboration between both parties,” added PL.

The project also aims to promote social development through innovation and knowledge in the field of AI, in which China plays an important role internationally.

For her part, the foreign director of the Institute, Yailé Caballero Mota, stated that this “unprecedented initiative for the island” is “a great door for our universities and countries to continue traveling along the path of solidarity, development, innovation and knowledge,” quoted PL.

This center is in Hebei in northern China and during its inauguration it was presented as “a driving force for progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with a direct impact on the Houses of Higher Studies and significant contributions to the well-being of the population.”

Finally, the aforementioned media added that the head of the MES had previously visited the city of Shanghai, in the east of the Asian giant. During that visit he met with academic leaders and explored other opportunities for collaboration with prominent educational institutions.

Specifically, the Cuban delegation spoke with representatives of the Universities of Science and Technology and the Normal del Este. In addition, he met with the president of the Government Education Commission and the authorities of the Academy of Social Sciences.
