Mayors across the country signed orders to declare May 2 a non-school day for students. Thus, school holidays will be from May 1 to 6, inclusive. Their decision is in accordance with the Law on preschool and school education, according to which the mayors of municipalities can declare up to three calendar days as non-school days within one school year for schools on the territory of the municipality.
The mayor of Blagoevgrad Metodi Baikushev, the mayor of Plovdiv Kostadin Dimitrov, the mayor of Stara Zagora Zhivko Todorov, the mayor of Haskovo municipality Stanislav Dechev, the mayor of Dimitrovgrad municipality Ivo Dimov, the mayor of of Troyan municipality Donka Mihailova.
The Mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, also announced May 2 as a non-school day for schools in Sofia. “I announce the date of May 2, 2024 as a non-school day for the schools on the territory of the Metropolitan Municipality under the title – Day to get to know Sofia”, the mayor’s order reads.
In the municipalities of Lovech and Troyan, May 2 has also been declared a non-school day. This was done by the orders of the mayor of Lovech, Stracimir Petkov, and of Troyan, Donka Mihailova.
The mayor of Smolyan Nikolay Melemov also announced May 2 as a non-school day for schools in the municipality of Smolyan, the municipal press center reported. However, the Regional Department of Education specified that for the moment only Smolyan of the 10 municipalities in the district introduces a non-school day on Maundy Thursday.
For the students in Pleven, apart from May 2, May 15 will also be closed, decided the mayor Dr. Valentin Hristov.
The announcement of May 15 as a non-school day is in connection with the Preschool and School Education Act, according to which the mayor of the municipality can declare up to three calendar days as non-school days within one school year for schools in the territory of the municipality, notifying the head of the Regional Department of Education.
The municipality added that the holiday program for the days around May 15 is being prepared. For the first year, the local government will dedicate a whole week with festive events dedicated to Easter. In this way, from the end of April until the middle of May, Pleven residents will be able to enjoy a variety of cultural events, writes BNT.
