Away from the media spotlight that surrounds other larger events such as the National Series or the Elite League, the Champion Clubs Tournament has successfully returned to the Cuban baseball calendar in 2024.
After more than 15 years since its last edition, the contest that pits the holders of each provincial series against each other is already at the threshold of the phase prior to the discussion of the scepter and so far the two phases disputed have been held seriously and dedication on the part of the teams involved, in addition to notable own initiatives that have distinguished the competition.
Last weekend the quarterfinal clashes were held, always in the best of three, where Trinidad and Campechuela emerged victorious in the eastern zone, while Mantua and Unión de Reyes advanced in the western sector, although the case of the latter classified , his victory over Santa Clara was dotted with controversy.
The representative team of Villa Clara complained to the National Commission about the presence of players from other municipalities in the Matanzas team, which finally won 2-1 in the private series, but the final discussion on the matter is still unknown today.
Given this scenario, the Western final is agreed for now between Unión de Reyes and Mantua. In the case of the ninth team from Pinar del Río, they expeditiously completed the process with a two-game sweep of the Havana team from Cerro.
With this same result, the crossings in the east of the country were resolved, although in very different parties. On the one hand, Campechuela barely allowed offensive liberties to the entire municipality of Santiago de Cuba in both challenges. However, Las Tunas sold their loss to Trinidad dearly and lost both times by just one run.
This weekend the duels that will define the two clubs that will win the crown that a representative from Guantánamo last won in 2008 will take place in the territory of Pinar del Río and Sancti Spíritus.
The end of this event, which is expected to return permanently to the national baseball scene, will be the prelude to the 63rd National Series, scheduled to begin on March 9.
