While continuous Internet outages are reported in Cuba, the Cuban Minister of Communications has reported with great fanfare about the “good figures” that the sector has reported in the last period.

The owner took advantage of the XIX International Computer Convention and Fair 2024 to proudly say that more than 7 million Cubans use cell phones and around 6 million are connected to the internet through mobile data.

But the best was when he mentioned that the average monthly data consumption in Cuba is 7.7 gigabytes, “driven by the installation of the second Arimao fiber optic cable.”

Certainly this cable did not bring any notable improvement to the Internet connection on the island, something that the users themselves claim on social networks, beyond the media silence that this issue has had for some reason.

At a time when thousands of Cubans report the impossibility of accessing the Internet after the anti-government protests in Santiago de Cuba and other territories, the minister prefers to talk about the good numbers and a “computerized society.”

Meanwhile Etecsa, the telecommunications monopoly in Cuba and under state control, has not said a word about it. Their posts were aimed at “enjoying” two of their international promotions, that is, that Cubans abroad pay in foreign currency to be able to communicate with their relatives in the country.
