A seasoned public health professional with over three decades of experience working alongside Andrew Cuomo makes the case for the former governor’s leadership as New York City faces ongoing challenges. While acknowledging Cuomo’s imperfections, the expert emphasizes his demonstrated ability to navigate crises and prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations.
New York City is at a crossroads, and the choice of its next mayor will be pivotal. As the city grapples with persistent issues and potential future threats, a voice with unique insight into Cuomo’s capabilities has emerged. “I’ve known Andrew Cuomo for more than 30 years,” states the expert, who wishes to remain anonymous, “But we’re not what you’d call friends. And I’m not a politician.” Instead, this individual brings a viewpoint rooted in public health and direct experience collaborating with Cuomo during critical moments in New York’s history.
From Housing Advocate to Effective Leader: Early Collaboration
The first encounter between the expert and Cuomo occurred in the early 1990s, a period marked by a growing housing crisis. At the time, Cuomo, a young lawyer, was working with the New York Legal Aid Society, advocating for the rights of the homeless. The expert, then a physician focused on the health needs of vulnerable populations, found himself collaborating with Cuomo on initiatives to address the root causes of homelessness and provide medical care to those living on the streets. “He was remarkably dedicated and bright, even then,” the expert recalls. “He had a knack for understanding complex issues and translating them into practical solutions.”
The Response to Superstorm Sandy
The devastation of Superstorm Sandy. The storm, one of the largest weather emergencies in modern memory, demanded an immediate and coordinated response. According to the expert, “Cuomo got the job done,” effectively coordinating with the Federal emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and then-mayor Mike Bloomberg to address the immediate crisis.
At the time, the expert served as director of Columbia University’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness and was deeply involved in disaster response planning. Cuomo subsequently appointed him to lead one of the state’s after-action teams, tasked with analyzing the response to Sandy and identifying areas for betterment. “My team was thorough and pulled no punches about mistakes the state made during the crisis,” the expert explains. Crucially, Cuomo listened to the team’s findings, challenged their conclusions, and then “acted,” implementing policy changes and revised protocols to enhance future disaster preparedness. “We were definitely impressed,” the expert states.
The third notable collaboration occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cuomo emerged as one of the nation’s most proactive governors, holding daily press briefings and implementing measures based on the advice of public health experts. while acknowledging that mistakes were inevitable in the face of an unprecedented crisis, the expert emphasizes Cuomo’s adaptability and decisive action.
“Like all leaders navigating this unprecedented crisis, mistakes were made – no one had perfect foresight,” the expert concedes. Though, what stood out was Cuomo’s willingness to adapt, communicate regularly with the public, and approach the pandemic with the same “intensity, pragmatism, and concern for human welfare” demonstrated decades earlier in his work with the homeless.
A Decisive Leader for a city in Crisis
The expert believes Cuomo’s leadership qualities – dedication, intelligence, and the ability to translate ideas into action – are precisely what New York City needs now. “Leadership is often tested in moments of crisis, and in my direct experience, Cuomo consistently demonstrated these qualities,” he asserts. He also highlights Cuomo’s consistent focus on the needs of vulnerable populations and his commitment to improving systems that serve New Yorkers.
Acknowledging Cuomo’s “vulnerabilities and past mistakes,” the expert ultimately argues that his strengths outweigh his weaknesses, particularly in a time of ongoing crisis. “Again, he’s not perfect, but in a time of constant crisis, including threats of an invasion by Donald Trump’s ICE militia coming to our city, I think we’d be best served by Andrew Cuomo in charge at City Hall.”
The expert, a pediatrician, is cofounder of Children’s Health Fund, founding director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, and cofounder of the Ukraine Children’s Action Project.
