“The European Commission has designated cancer as one of the EU’s five main missions, guiding research and innovation funding.”

“Cancer represents one of Europe’s most pressing public health problems. The European Research Council (ERC) plays a central role in advancing our understanding of the development and progression of cancer through its support of research based on cutting-edge technology, thus paving the way for innovative treatments” commented in a scientific article the journal Technology of the European Commission Cordis. He points out that nine cutting-edge research projects funded by the E.U. are dedicated to advancing cancer research.

In 2020, 2.7 million people in the European Union were diagnosed with cancer and another 1.3 million died from the disease. Projections show that cancer cases will increase by 24% by 2035, making it the leading cause of death in Europe. Recognizing the magnitude of this challenge, the European Commission has designated cancer as one of the EU’s five main missions, guiding research and innovation funding. Aim to improve our understanding of cancer, promote better prevention and early detection, improve methods of diagnosis and treatment and enhance the quality of life, both for patients and their families.

Europe’s plan to fight cancer will direct €4 billion to research efforts combined with new forms of governance and cooperation, supported by the EU4Health programme. The European Research Council (ERC) funds research using scientific excellence as the sole criterion for awarding the relevant funds.

Health research occupies a prominent position in the ERC project portfolio. An analysis of the survey revealed that about a third of the funded projects are related to various areas of health research and technology. The report identified a total of 2,281 projects, which received a total of €4.6 billion in grants and employed thousands of researchers from EU member states. and other countries.

The ERC provides support to a wide range of cancer research projects, including cell and molecular biology, immunology and genetics, as well as the examination of tumor progression and the development of drugs and delivery methods. These ERC-funded projects contribute to the discovery of new knowledge about the disease, inform prevention strategies, advance our ability for early detection and shape the development of effective treatments for those living with the disease. Innovative approaches have the potential to extend people’s lives and well-being, both in Europe and around the world, helping people live more dignified and healthier lives.

The projects presented in the Cordis article reflect the breadth of approaches to cancer treatment. The VENUSCANCER project is helping us understand the reasons behind the starkly different patterns of survival and death in cancers affecting women around the world, while BRAIN-MATCH and PedSarc offer a better understanding of the processes underlying the development of childhood cancers. The TargetBRCA and RxmiRcanceR projects have identified new therapies, while PML-THERAPY is helping researchers optimize existing ones as well as discover new ones. The THERMONANO project developed chemotherapy that patients can take at home. In addition the MEL-Interactions and EPIC projects developed new tools and models to categorize tumors and facilitate the creation of effective personalized cancer therapies.
