Cherokee County Cyclist Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver; GoFundMe Launched for Children

A dedicated single father and avid cyclist was fatally struck Sunday in Cherokee County, Georgia, after authorities say a driver under the influence crossed into his lane. The incident has sparked renewed calls for responsible driving and a community effort to support the victim’s four children.

The 51-year-old victim, remembered by friends as a quiet but strong personality, died while pursuing his passion for cycling on Sugar Pike Road in Canton. According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, a vehicle driven by 42-year-old Lane Keyes swerved into the cyclist’s lane, resulting in a collision.

“Carlos was a very quiet, introverted person, but he was very strong in terms of his personality,” a close friend, Frank Gerdts, shared. Gerdts has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide for Moreno’s children.

Keyes now faces a series of charges related to the incident, including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. Additional charges include tampering with evidence, weaving over the roadway, driving too fast for conditions, possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, and reckless driving.

Community Responds to Tragedy

The loss has deeply impacted the local cycling community. Gerdts initially considered giving up the sport, but ultimately decided to continue riding in honor of his friend. “I was going to hang up my bike and not ride anymore, but I know he wouldn’t want that. He would still want us to continue riding,” he stated.

The tragedy underscores the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Advocates are reiterating the availability of alternative transportation options. “There’s Uber. We’ve heard it over and over and over — it’s really not worth it,” Gerdts emphasized.

Supporting the Family

The GoFundMe campaign aims to alleviate the financial burden on Moreno’s children as they navigate this difficult time. Details regarding memorial services and further support opportunities will be released by the family in the coming days.
