Czech Republic Braces for Dramatic Weather Shift: From Spring-Like Temperatures to Snowfall
A volatile weather pattern is set to sweep across the Czech Republic this week, bringing a brief respite of warmer temperatures before a sharp return to wintry conditions. While milder air initially flows into the region, a significant cooling trend is expected by the weekend, with snowfall anticipated even at lower elevations.
Warm Air Influx Gives Way to Atlantic Systems
Currently, colder air is flowing into the Czech Republic along the edge of a high-pressure system over northeastern Europe, but this pattern is short-lived. According to forecasts, this high-pressure area will shift eastward during the week, opening the door for a large trough of low air originating over the Atlantic. This will usher in a series of frontal systems and increased precipitation across Central Europe.
The influx of warm air from the southwest will bring temperatures approaching springtime levels, with some areas potentially exceeding 10 °C. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has been closely monitoring the developing situation.
Week-Long Forecast: Cloudy Skies and Variable Temperatures
For the majority of the week, the Czech Republic will experience predominantly cloudy conditions, with limited sunshine appearing between frontal passages. Tuesday and Thursday are expected to see particularly overcast skies, especially in Moravia and Silesia.
A significant change is predicted for the weekend, as colder air from the northwest descends upon the country on the trailing edge of the departing low-pressure system. This will bring a return to snowfall, initially affecting higher elevations but potentially reaching lower ground as temperatures plummet.
Monday: Fog, Ice, and Light Precipitation
Monday will be characterized by cloudy to overcast skies. Fog is likely to form in Bohemia during the morning, while Moravia may experience icy conditions. Light snow or drizzle is possible in the eastern half of the country, potentially freezing and creating light ice. Temperatures will range from around -1 °C in the morning to 1-5 °C in the afternoon, with the northeast remaining near 0 °C. A light easterly wind is expected.
Tuesday: Freezing Rain and a Break in the West
Tuesday will begin with cloudy and foggy conditions, with the potential for freezing rain in northeastern areas, particularly in the morning. Above 600 meters, precipitation will primarily fall as snow. However, the western half of Bohemia may see partly clear skies develop during the afternoon. Morning lows will hover around 0 °C, dropping to -4 °C in the northeast. Afternoon temperatures will reach 1-5 °C, with southern Bohemia and Polabà potentially reaching 8 °C. A moderate southerly wind will prevail.
Mid-Week: Occlusion Front and Rising Temperatures
An occlusion front is forecast to arrive from the west on Wednesday, bringing cloudy skies and increasing occasional rain across most of the country. Above 600 meters, this will transition to snowfall. Freezing precipitation, potentially forming glaciers, is possible in the Czech Republic during the morning. Temperatures will generally be around the freezing point in the morning, rising to 2-6 °C in the afternoon, with warmer temperatures of up to 8 °C expected from the southwest. A moderate south to southeast wind will accompany the front. Afternoon temperatures are expected to exceed 10 °C in some locations.
Thursday: Continued Rain and Mild Temperatures
Thursday will be cloudy to overcast, with partly cloudy conditions in Moravia and Silesia. Occasional rain will increase again throughout the day in Bohemia, even extending to the mountains. Morning lows will remain around 5 °C, with afternoon highs reaching 6-10 °C, and locally up to 12 °C in Polabà and southern Moravia. A moderate south-west to south wind will be present.
Friday: Precipitation Diminishes, Temperatures Remain Mild
Precipitation will gradually decrease on Friday, with fading rain expected, particularly in eastern regions. The Czech Republic will be largely cloudy, with temporary periods of partial clearing. Morning temperatures will range from 5-2 °C, rising to 7-10 °C in the afternoon, and up to 12 °C in southern Moravia. A moderate southerly wind will blow.
Weekend Chill: Return to Winter Conditions
The latest numerical models indicate a noticeable cooling trend will arrive from the northwest over the weekend. Saturday will see a stark temperature divide, with Moravia still experiencing temperatures up to 10 °C, while Bohemia will drop to near or below freezing. Precipitation is expected, transitioning to snow above 400 meters, and eventually at lower elevations. By Sunday, temperatures across the Czech Republic will level off around 2 °C, with snow showers confined to mountainous areas and occasional sunshine breaking through the clouds.
