The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Domna Michailidou, referred to the Joint Ministerial Decision on the support of LARCO workers, whose contracts expire tomorrow, May 12, stressing that “the government protects the workers, but also the taxpayers, who have been burdened with billions euros from the operation of the loss-making business for a number of years”.

“We provide them with a guaranteed job, well-paid at 1,200 euros, with a salary essentially 50% higher than the minimum wage. Specifically, to all former employees who are over 55 years old, we ensure at least seven years of work with 1,200 euros in municipalities and regions, in order to complete the necessary conditions for retirement. For those who are up to 54 years old, we have secured them work for two years in public sector bodies with a salary also of 1,200 euros. From LARCO, no one will be left on the street. We ensure everyone’s work,” said the Minister of Labor speaking to “Sky”.

Regarding the transfer of workers, Mrs. Michailidou underlined that “the answer to the lack of labor force is not one. Part of the answer is the recall of workers from other countries, but also training. As far as repatriations are concerned, there is a bilateral agreement with Egypt on the simplification of the conditions for the entry of workers from Egypt into our country for nine months. This applies to land workers, but also includes the catering industry and the tourism industry. This is done through a platform. We have the list of the first 2,400 out of the 5,000 initially provided for by this bilateral agreement, who are coming to help the Greek economy for nine months under very specific conditions.”

With reference to the camps, Mrs. Michailidou reminded that, tomorrow, 12/5, the submission of electronic applications for participation in the “2024 children’s accommodation program in children’s camps” of the Public Employment Service (DYPA) expires. “Together with the corresponding program of EFKA, more than 100,000 children, aged 6-16, throughout Greece will be able to go on vacation from two weeks to one month, paid for by the Ministry of Labour. In fact, the income criteria are increased. A family with an income of up to 30,000 euros, which is an average family income, can send their child to the camps. Children with disabilities, single-parent families and families with many children have a higher score. Our goal is for the children to have a good time in the summer and for the parents to organize their time as well,” he emphasized.
