Dakota Johnson made a surprise appearance at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27 in Los Angeles, wearing a custom blush Calvin Klein Collection gown. She presented Taylor Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award and debuted their music video project.
Stepping away from a busy press schedule, Dakota Johnson arrived at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards during the Sunday night ceremony in Los Angeles. Her unannounced arrival marked her first time attending the VMAs according to event coverage. While most stars bypassed the perfunctory red carpet photo call, opting instead to make their grand entrances live in front of a nationwide audience, Johnson’s appearance brought her straight to the stage as noted by Marie Claire.
Participating in Sunday night’s historical VMAs gathering, Dakota Johnson was among the prominent figures present, with the upcoming thriller Verity soon featuring her alongside Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway. Though most stars skipped the perfunctory red carpet photo call, the MTV Video Music Awards stage was positively overrun with A-list talent, as celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter and Kacey Musgraves chose to forgo the usual dog-and-pony show to make their grand entrances live in front of a nationwide audience. Going sheer and showing underwear is practically par for the course at the VMAs, and had Johnson arrived in one of her signature sheer looks, no one would have been surprised.
The Custom Calvin Klein Column Gown and Messika Jewelry
The actress traded the transparent fabrics of her recent promotional appearances for a streamlined Calvin Klein Collection gown in a blush-beige tone. Styled by Kate Young, the floor-length piece featured micro-spaghetti straps, an open back, and a column silhouette covered in shimmering sequins that reflected the stage lights.
Rather than relying on completely see-through fabrics, her outfit proved that the naked-dress trend can be achieved more subtly by employing sequins and a coordinating lining to preserve a skin-like aesthetic without burdening the ensemble with too many accessories. Just three days earlier, Johnson attended the London screening of Verity in an ivory lace dress by New York designer Colleen Allen that took a much more transparent approach, and she also chose a black Valentino gown featuring a plunging neckline, draped sleeves, a mermaid-style skirt, and a cutout at the waist for the 2026 Kering Foundation Caring for Women dinner in New York.
While fashion commentary in Marie Claire noted the design’s closeness to the skin offered a demure, full-coverage lining and a PG take on naked dressing, other coverage highlighted a high slit and a bold, shimmering finish with a pale pink liquid design. For her unexpected cameo, the star accessorized with a dazzling Messika diamond necklace, wearing her hair down in a straight, sleek style.

Presenting Taylor Swift With the Inaugural Artist Director Honors
Midway through the ceremony, Johnson took the stage to present Taylor Swift with the first-ever Artist Director Honors award, a new recognition celebrating directorial work and visual storytelling in music videos, which officially made Swift the most-awarded artist in VMAs history with 31 Moonmen according to Marie Claire.
“She’s a visionary, with a relentless drive for perfection in everything that she does.”
Dakota Johnson, Presenter
Taylor and I have been friends for a really long time and we’re very close, and we decided to work together and it’s great,
Johnson said on Ambar Lee and Leah Briars’ Fangirl Nation podcast on Thursday.
Following the presentation and acceptance speech, the broadcast featured the world premiere of Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video co-starring Johnson and Colin Farrell.
