Daniel Radcliffe: Arctic Monkeys Are the Best Live Band Ever

LONDON, November 22, 2023 — Daniel Radcliffe has declared Arctic Monkeys the greatest live band he’s ever witnessed, sparking a nostalgic conversation among fans about the Sheffield band’s meteoric rise. The actor’s pick highlights a pivotal moment in music history and offers a glimpse into his personal concert experiences.

A Tent Packed with Potential

Radcliffe recalls seeing the band on the cusp of fame at the Reading Festival.

  • Radcliffe first saw Arctic Monkeys perform at the Reading Festival around 2006, shortly before the release of their debut album.
  • He described the atmosphere as electric, with a crowd far exceeding the tent’s capacity.
  • The actor admitted to illegally downloading the band’s music before the concert.
  • Radcliffe is currently rehearsing for the Broadway production of Every Brilliant Thing.
  • Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders indicated the band intends to continue making music together.

“I went to the Reading Festival in [when I was] 16, and Arctic Monkeys were playing in a tent,” Radcliffe recounted to Rolling Stone when asked about his favorite concert experience. “They were halfway up the bill of the smallest tent of the festival because they were not yet famous, except they were.”

He vividly remembers the anticipation surrounding the band, even before their breakthrough album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, officially dropped. “The album wasn’t out, but if you were illegally downloading music, which, I’m sorry, I did, you could have listened to the whole thing. Watching this band right on the cusp of becoming massive, where they were in a tent that was probably for a few thousand people, and there were probably like 10,000 people trying to cram in there, that was really cool.”

Beyond the Stage: Current Projects

Radcliffe is currently immersed in rehearsals for Every Brilliant Thing, a one-man Broadway show centered around a character compiling a list of reasons to live in an effort to support his mother. The play previously featured a rotating cast of notable performers in the West End, including Lenny Henry, Ambika Mod, Sue Perkins, Jonny Donahoe, and Minnie Driver.

Late last year, the actor shared a heartwarming reunion with his former Harry Potter co-star, Tom Felton, 24 years after the release of the first film in the beloved franchise.

Arctic Monkeys’ Recent Activity

Arctic Monkeys recently released “Opening Night,” a subtle and cinematic track featured on War Child’s charity compilation album, ‘Help(2).’ The song marked their first new material in some time, fueling speculation about the band’s future.

Amidst rumors of a potential disbandment, drummer Matt Helders reassured fans, stating that making music with Arctic Monkeys is “something they will always do.” Speaking to BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show (via BBC News), Helders explained, “I think we went into this knowing it was a one-off. But then, having done it, we probably went away feeling like we just had a lot of fun making this record.”

“There’s no conversations about it, but it’s definitely something we love to do and we’ll always do.”
