Cartagena Tourist Attacks: Four arrested in Connection with Russian Citizen’s Murder

Deadly Encounters in the Historic Center
The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of attacks targeting visitors to Cartagena’s historic center. According to authorities, the four suspects – identified as Luis Alfredo Barco Chaverra, Juan David Sierra Padilla, deivinson Blanco Barrios, and Hollyfyr Cesaren Méndez – allegedly lured tourists through dating applications, gaining their trust before orchestrating robberies and attempted financial exploitation.
The Russian citizen was not the only victim. Investigators found evidence suggesting the group preyed upon multiple individuals, including tourists from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and El Salvador. The group would arrange meetings in the Historic center, convincing victims to enter private vehicles, and then transport them to Turbaco, where they were robbed and pressured to surrender their bank account facts.
A Brutal Attack and Subsequent Cover-Up
The case took a tragic turn with the death of the Russian citizen. On October 2nd, the man met an individual as pre-arranged. Shortly after entering a vehicle, two additional men boarded, initiating a violent assault. The victim was severely beaten and demanded to relinquish his belongings. When he resisted, the situation escalated.
“The victim’s resistance provoked a more severe reaction from the criminals,” a senior official stated.
The suspects then allegedly attacked the man with a sharp weapon, inflicting multiple stab wounds. They continued the assault by strangling him,ultimately resulting in his death. In a desperate attempt to conceal the crime, the four men set the body ablaze and abandoned it on a rural property in the BolÃvar department.
“Campanita” Admits Role in Scheme
Authorities swiftly moved to apprehend the suspects, and a judge imposed a preventative detention measure on Monday, December 30th, citing the potential danger they pose if released.during questioning, three of the four accused denied the charges. However, Luis Alfredo Barco Chaverra, known as “Campanita,” confessed to his involvement, admitting his role was to initiate contact with tourists via the dating submission.
“His role in the association was to make contact with tourists in the application,” the judge stated.
