Mother Attacks Daughter with Machete, Then Attempts Suicide in Bengaluru Temple
A shocking act of violence unfolded in Bengaluru on Wednesday, as a 55-year-old woman attacked her daughter with a machete before attempting to take her own life at the Harihareshwara Temple in Sampigehalli.
A senior official stated that the incident occurred around 4:30 pm when the two women arrived at the temple, located off Thanisandra Main Road, to participate in a puja, or religious ritual. Witnesses quickly intervened, rushing both individuals to a local hospital and alerting authorities.
Critical Condition for Daughter, Mother Under Observation
While the accused, identified as Sarojamma, is currently out of danger and under medical observation, her daughter, Rekha, 25, sustained severe injuries to her neck and remains in critical condition. The extent of Rekha’s injuries suggests a deliberate and brutal attack.
Marital Strife and Spiritual Seeking
Initial investigations reveal a complex backdrop to the violence. Rekha reportedly lives in Anekal with her husband, Somashekar, a weaver by profession, but frequently returned to her mother’s home following arguments. Both women had been attending special pujas in an attempt to resolve Rekha’s marital problems.
Sarojamma had recently sought guidance from an astrologer, who recommended the pujas to ward off perceived negative influences affecting the family. This suggests a belief in supernatural forces contributing to the family’s difficulties.
Police Investigation Underway
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and police are currently analyzing the footage as part of their investigation. The Sampigehalli Police have registered a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code – attempt to murder – and are awaiting the recovery of both women to obtain their statements.
Notably, police reported that Rekha’s husband, Somashekar, did not respond to repeated calls following notification of the incident. This lack of response raises further questions about the dynamics within the family.
