The native of the American state of Missouri was twenty-one years old when he developed an addiction to cigarettes. As he himself admits, he was able to smoke a pack a day. However, in 2014 he switched to vaping. He confided to American television CBS that he lived under the belief that vaping was a healthier alternative to smoking.
He started having health problems in April of this year. He suffered from shortness of breath and sought medical attention. Diagnosed with the flu, Davey also contracted Pseudomonas bacteria, which causes an infection that is resistant to antibiotic treatment. The infection affected both of his lungs. His condition continued to worsen, and doctors even considered stopping the treatment, according to information from the American newspaper New York Post.
He was eventually transported to Northwestern Center Hospital in Chicago, where they performed unorthodox surgery that saved his life. Due to Davey’s serious condition, the doctors decided to remove the infection before performing a lung transplant. “When you looked at his X-ray, there was nothing left. The lungs were completely filled with pus,” said transplant center director Rade Tomic, noting that they had to clear the infection before they could put Davey on the transplant list. “The only way we could do it was to remove both lungs,” he added. That’s when breast implants came into play!
During the operation, surgeons removed both of his lungs and replaced them with artificial ones. Subsequently, breast implants were inserted into his chest cavity to keep his heart in place. “We had to come up with something very creative,” said surgeon Ankit Bharat. Within just twenty-four hours, the medical team found a suitable lung for Davey to transplant.
