David Linde Named CEO of Sundance Institute, Charting Course for Boulder Transition

The Sundance Institute, a cornerstone of independent filmmaking, has appointed David Linde as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective February 17, 2026. This leadership change comes as the Institute prepares for a significant shift, relocating the Sundance Film Festival to Boulder, Colorado, beginning in 2027.

A Legacy of Support for Independent Storytelling

For over four decades, the Sundance Institute has played a pivotal role in nurturing independent voices and connecting their stories with global audiences. As the organization moves forward, Linde will oversee all facets of its operations, including artist labs, grants, fellowships, the Sundance Collab platform, public programs, and the landmark Sundance Film Festival.

“For over 40 years, Sundance Institute has stood at the intersection of artistic excellence, audience impact, and industry significance by playing a formative role in shaping the careers of filmmakers and uplifting independent work globally,” stated Ebs Burnough, Sundance Institute Board Chair. “Following a period of interim leadership, we are pleased to appoint David Linde as our permanent CEO.”

Linde’s Extensive Industry Experience

Linde brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as CEO of Participant, a company known for its socially impactful entertainment. His career also includes leadership positions at Universal Pictures, Focus Features, Good Machine, and Lava Bear Films, demonstrating a consistent commitment to fostering creativity and expanding the reach of independent cinema.

“David brings a rare combination of industry fluency, social cause management, and a deep commitment to artists,” Burnough added. “This positions the organization to build on our legacy while advancing our mission for the future.”

The incoming CEO expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “I am honored to join Sundance Institute as CEO to steward an organization that is essential to independent artists, the broader creative community, and culture at large.” He further pledged to collaborate with staff, artists, partners, and the board to ensure the continued success of the Institute’s programs and the enduring power of original storytelling.

A Focus on Artists and Innovation

Linde’s appointment signals a continued emphasis on supporting artists and adapting to the evolving landscape of the film industry. His background in founding and scaling organizations, coupled with his dedication to prioritizing the needs of storytellers and audiences, suggests a strategic and values-driven approach to leadership. He has been consulting for film and media companies in the U.S. and Europe while also executive producing multiple titles since leaving his role at Participant in 2024.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Linde actively contributes to the broader film community through his involvement with the American Film Institute, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts North America, and Film Independent. He also served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including a term as Treasurer.
