A dominant performance on both ends of the court saw the Washington Huskies women’s basketball team defeat San Jose State 80–54 Monday night at Alaska Airlines Arena, extending their perfect start to the season to 8-0. The Huskies showcased impressive shooting and rebounding, signaling a strong start to their Big Ten campaign.

Second Quarter Surge Propels Washington

The Huskies established control of the game with a commanding 26–11 run in the second quarter. This pivotal stretch allowed Washington to build a significant lead and dictate the tempo for the remainder of the contest. The team’s offensive efficiency improved throughout the game, culminating in shooting percentages of 55.6% in the second quarter and 54.5% in the fourth.

Rebounding Prowess Fuels Victory

Washington’s dominance extended beyond shooting, as they thoroughly outrebounded San Jose State 49–28. A key factor in this advantage was their ability to secure 22 offensive rebounds, which they converted into 30 crucial second-chance points. This relentless effort on the glass proved to be a major difference-maker.

Sellers Shines, Reaches Career Milestone

Sayvia Sellers led all scorers with a remarkable 29 points, shooting 9-for-16 from the field. The junior guard also contributed six rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal. Notably, her second 3-pointer of the night marked her 900th career point as a Husky. “Sellers was exceptional tonight, really driving the offense and creating opportunities for her teammates,” a team spokesperson noted.

Howell and McGaughy Contribute Key Performances

Avery Howell continued her impressive form, delivering her third consecutive double-figure performance with 17 points, alongside six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Howell electrified the crowd with a four-point play, drawing the loudest cheer of the evening. Freshman Brynn McGaughy also impressed, adding 15 points on efficient 6-for-11 shooting and leading the team with eight rebounds and four blocks.

Team Effort and Upcoming Schedule

The Huskies displayed strong teamwork, totaling 13 assists on the night, with Devin Coppinger contributing three assists along with six rebounds and four points. Washington’s next challenge will be on the road against USC on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 5:00 p.m. in the Galen Center.
