In-Custody Death Prompts Investigation in Lyon County, Nevada
A person arrested for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender died Wednesday while in the custody of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), triggering a joint investigation by state and local authorities. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to a statement released by the LCSO.
The incident began Wednesday when the LCSO’s sex offender task force responded to a residence in Dayton, Nevada, following a tip regarding an individual who had allegedly not complied with state registration requirements.
Arrest and Transport
Following the arrest, the subject was being transported to the Lyon County jail. According to the LCSO release, during the transport, a deputy stopped at the Silver Springs substation to adjust the individual’s restraints. It was at this point that the subject became unresponsive.
“Deputies immediately initiated CPR,” the LCSO stated. Upon the arrival of Central Lyon Fire personnel, lifesaving efforts were continued, but the subject was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the death are now under investigation by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada State Police. The LCSO has not released any further details regarding the individual’s identity or the nature of the original conviction.
The investigation will focus on determining the cause of death and ensuring all protocols were followed during the arrest and transport process. Authorities have not indicated a timeline for the completion of the investigation.
