Kabul: A Taliban governor was killed in a suicide bomb blast in Afghanistan’s Balkh province. Governor Muhammad Dawood was killed in Musam. The blast took place inside the governor’s office in the provincial capital. IS claimed responsibility for the blast.

The police said that the explosion took place on the second floor of the governor’s office around 9 am on Thursday.

IS claimed that some security personnel were also killed in the blast. Many people have been injured.

Muzammil was previously appointed governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar and reportedly led the fight against Islamic State militants. He was transferred to Balkh last October.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted that the governor was martyred in the blast carried out by the enemies of Islam. Mohammad Dawood Musammil is the most senior official to be killed since the Taliban came to power in 2021.
