Title: Deadly Wildfires Ravage Greece, Dozens Arrested on Arson Charges

Subtitle: Greek Authorities Battling Largest Wildfires Ever Recorded in the European Union

The largest ever recorded wildfires in the European Union continue to wreak havoc across Greece, with authorities making dozens of arrests on arson-related charges. The Greek government is grappling with the devastating effects of the wildfires, which have caused significant loss of life and extensive damage to forests and wildlife.

The wildfires, particularly those in Mount Parnitha near the capital city Athens, remain out of control, with more forest area destroyed overnight. The situation is dire, and Greek authorities are struggling to contain the fires and limit their impact.

Among the affected regions, the northeastern town of Alexandroupolis in the Evros region has witnessed the most significant fire front line. The relentless wildfires have forced residents to evacuate, leaving behind a trail of destruction in their wake.

Tragically, a burned body was discovered on a rural road near Dadia national park, close to the Turkish border. Authorities suspect that the victim may be a migrant. Earlier in the week, 18 people were found dead near a village in northern Greece, and there was another casualty in a fire northwest of Athens.

In response to the crisis, Greek police have made 79 arrests related to arson. The government spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, confirmed the arrests, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Greek Climate Crisis Minister Vassilis Kikilias expressed outrage and condemned the perpetrators, stating, “What is happening is not just impermissible, but obscene and criminal.” He further warned that those responsible would not be spared, vowing to hold them accountable for their actions.

The European Union has been monitoring the wildfires closely, and EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič has declared the fires in Alexandroupolis as officially the largest wildfires ever recorded in the EU. With over 73,000 hectares burned, the magnitude of the disaster is unprecedented. Lenarčič called for increased national and collective prevention and preparedness efforts to combat the growing threat of wildfires.

The fires have already consumed an astonishing 1.3 billion square meters (130,000 hectares) across Greece, setting a new EU record, according to the European Forest Fire Information System. The situation is so severe that even the efforts of helicopters, dropping up to 11 tons of water on the wildfires every couple of minutes, have been hampered. Officials explained that the helicopters had to stop working overnight, exacerbating the challenges faced in containing the fires.

As Greece battles against this devastating crisis, the international community must come together to support the country in its efforts to combat the wildfires and protect the lives and livelihoods of its citizens. With fire seasons becoming more brutal each year, it is imperative to prioritize prevention and preparedness measures to mitigate such catastrophic events in the future.
