The facts took place in Vieux-Condé, in the North. “Three individuals” aged 18, 17 and 14, “who had no criminal record”, were indicted, said the Valenciennes prosecutor’s office.

On the night of July 5 to 6, the Valenciennes police intervened in Vieux-Condé following the attack on this 72-year-old man “who was discovered lying on the public highway”. According to the first investigations, the victim had left her home around 11 p.m. “due to the noisy presence of these three young people in front of her home”, underlined the prosecution.

” Voluntary homicide “

While the man invited them to leave the premises, “an altercation ensued, the 17-year-old young man punching and kicking the victim multiple times, especially when the latter was on the ground after to have fallen under the impact of the blows”, added this same source. Hospitalized since, his “vital prognosis was engaged”. According to a source familiar with the matter, he had been brain dead since Saturday.

“I have remained silent until today in the face of the tragedy that has affected our city. Like all of you, I am in a state of shock at this act of rare violence, ”said the mayor of the town, David Bustin, on Tuesday in a press release. “He is someone we have always known, a former retired florist who was part of the union of merchants of Vieux-Condé and was a member of the charity association Colis du Coeur”, specified to the AFP the mayor of the town.

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, lambasted on Twitter “an attack of nameless cowardice”, assuring that “this tragedy will not go unpunished”.
