Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie was one of the most illustrious representatives of the “New History” movement.

Specialist in the modern era and the climate, the historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie died Wednesday in Paris, AFP learned from his family, confirming information from Figaro. He was 94 years old.

This normalien, associate professor of history and doctor of letters, was a disciple of Fernand Braudel and one of the most illustrious representatives of the “New History” movement, alongside Jacques Le Goff in particular.

This lover of great wines has been a professor in Montpellier, a professor at the University of Paris-VII, general administrator of the National Library and even a professor at the Collège de France. He was also a columnist in Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur, L’Express and Le Figaro littéraire.

Pioneer of climate history

Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie published his first monograph on the climate in Languedoc in 1955 and his first History of the Climate in 1967, covering western, central and northern Europe and as far as the United States.

“Historians were not interested in it at the time, they made fun of me. They even said that it was a false science when it was a question of constituting knowledge”, he recalled in 2009 in an interview with AFP. “I admit that I am worried about my children and my grandchildren in the coming century,” he continued.

Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, one of the most translated historians in Europe and the United States, made himself known to the general public with his book Montaillou, Occitan village from 1294 to 1324. This work had become an improbable best- seller after its publication in 1975.
