Louisville Area Schools Navigate Frigid Temperatures with Closures and Delays

A major cold front has swept across the United States, prompting school closures and delays in the Louisville metropolitan area. Subzero wind chills and temperatures hovering just above 0°F are expected on the morning of December 15th, according to the National Weather Service, creating hazardous conditions for students. Districts are responding with a range of measures, from nontraditional instruction to delayed starts, prioritizing student safety amidst the extreme weather.

Widespread Impact Across Kentucky and Indiana

The cold snap is impacting schools across multiple counties in both Kentucky and Indiana. Several districts have opted for nontraditional instruction (NTI) days, allowing learning to continue remotely. Others are implementing delays to allow for safer travel conditions as temperatures rise.

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Shifts to NTI

JCPS schools will operate on an NTI day on December 15th due to the “forecasted frigid early morning temperatures.” A district spokesperson stated that the decision was made “with the safety and well-being of our students in mind, as they would be waiting at bus stops and walking to school in extremely cold conditions.” Despite the shift to remote learning, all after-school athletic and extracurricular activities will proceed as scheduled.

Catholic Schools and eLearning Alternatives

Jefferson County Catholic elementary and high schools will operate on a two-hour delay on December 15th, as announced via a Facebook post from the Archdiocese of Louisville. Several other districts are utilizing Synchronous eLearning, requiring live instruction via platforms like Google Meet. Greater Clark County Schools and New Albany Floyd County Consolidated (NAFCS) schools will both participate in Synchronous eLearning on December 15th, with attendance mandatory for students. NAFCS indicated that most students will participate in live instruction from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., citing continued low windchill temperatures and concerns about bus travel.

Delays and Road Conditions

Several schools are implementing two-hour delays, including Clarksville Community Schools and Spencer County Schools. Oldham County Schools will also utilize an NTI day, the third of the school year, citing “poor road conditions in parts of the county” as a contributing factor. Shelby County Public Schools announced a nontraditional instruction day due to morning temperatures and snow-covered side roads.

Status of Other Districts

As of this report, Bullitt County Public Schools have not yet announced any impacts to classes on December 15th. Fort Knox Community Schools will operate as normal.

University Operations

Classes have concluded for the Fall 2025 term at the University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, and Bellarmine University. Officials at these institutions have not yet announced any impacts to campus operations or final examinations. Spalding University has also not yet announced any impacts to classes.

The situation remains fluid as the cold front progresses. School officials are continuing to monitor conditions and prioritize the safety of students and staff. .
