Viral Video Falsely Linked to Shimjita Mustafa’s Arrest in Suicide Incitement Case
A widely circulated video claiming to show the arrest of Shimjita Mustafa, accused of inciting the suicide of Deepak in Kozhikode, has been debunked as misleading. Investigations reveal the footage originates from a separate incident in Kollam and is unrelated to Mustafa’s case.
The arrest of Shimjita Mustafa, following allegations of sharing a defamatory video on social media linked to the death of Deepak, a resident of Govindapuram, Kozhikode, sparked significant media attention. Authorities charged Mustafa with incitement to suicide, and a lookout notice was issued amid concerns she might attempt to leave the country. She was subsequently produced before the Kunnamangalam Magistrate Court and remanded for 14 days.
However, coinciding with these developments, a video began circulating on social media platforms purporting to depict Mustafa’s arrest. The footage shows female police officers taking a young woman into custody and placing her in a police vehicle. A closer examination quickly revealed discrepancies.
According to reports, Mathrubhumi News broadcast the news of Mustafa’s arrest live, noting she was wearing a black veil and mask at the time of her apprehension. This detail sharply contrasts with the woman in the viral video, who is seen wearing a black churidar and with her head and face uncovered. Furthermore, witnesses stated the police team arrived at Mustafa’s location in a private car, operating in plain clothes – a stark difference from the uniformed officers visible in the circulating video.
The key to unraveling the deception lay in identifying details within the video itself. The News Kerala logo and the marking “ANCHAL PS” on the police vehicle were clearly visible. This pointed investigators to Anchal Police Station, located in the Kollam District – a significant distance from Kozhikode, where Deepak’s death is being investigated by the Kozhikode Medical College Police.
A detailed search led investigators to a video uploaded to YouTube on November 24, 2023, by the channel News Keralam. The video’s description detailed a separate incident: “Ashwati left the baby and went with her lover on the day her husband hanged himself, Anchal appeared at the police along with her lawyer, and the police stopped her parents from assaulting Aswathi at the police station.”

This discovery definitively confirmed that the video circulating in connection with Shimjita Mustafa’s arrest was, in fact, a misrepresentation of an unrelated event. The incident involved a woman named Ashwati appearing at the Kollam Anchal Police Station regarding a family matter.
The case underscores the critical importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media, particularly in sensitive situations like ongoing criminal investigations. The rapid spread of misinformation can not only jeopardize legal proceedings but also inflict further emotional distress on those involved.
