Delhi University Students Union Elections Result

The 2026 Delhi University Students Union elections produced a striking independent victory for the vice-president post. Deepanshu Shokeen, a student in the Department of Buddhist Studies, secured 30,615 votes in the 2026 election. Shokeen defeated Ishu Maurya of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, who received 16,910 votes, and Virr Chatrath of the National Students’ Union of India, who garnered 4,313 votes. The resulting victory margin stood at 13,705 votes. Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad captured three key positions on the central panel, with Yash Dabas winning the post of President and Riya Chhawdi securing another key post.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh College and Department of Buddhist Studies

From Shaheed Bhagat Singh College to Buddhist Studies, Shokeen hails from Peeragarhi Village in Delhi. Prior to entering the Department of Buddhist Studies at Delhi University, he obtained his degree from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. His family background drew considerable attention during the campaign cycle. His father is employed as a bus conductor, while his mother works as an anganwadi worker. Family members wished for him to prepare for the UPSC examination, but he opted for being a part of student politics. It was during his college period that he took off in his political career and became a contestant in DUSU elections.

The path to the ballot box required overcoming major organizational hurdles. Shokeen had initially sought an NSUI ticket for the DUSU election, and his nomination was reportedly filed before he was later asked to withdraw from the contest. Rather than stepping aside, Shokeen chose to continue the electoral battle as an independent candidate. This pivot forced him to abandon established party machinery and build a direct support network directly among students, gaining visibility on the university campus that eventually resulted in a significant victory over candidates fielded by major student groups including ABVP, NSUI, and SFI.

Satya Niketan Tragedy and the Shoeless Protest

There had been casualties, even students from Delhi University, due to this accident, with the disaster killing seven people, including five Delhi University students. Shokeen openly sought justice for the safety of the students and their accommodation facilities. As part of the protest that he launched against the government, Shokeen made the choice of remaining shoeless until justice was done. This issue gained more relevance in the debate on DUSU elections, and he also campaigned on student-related concerns and attracted support during his campaign across the university’s colleges.

ABVP runner-up Ishu Maurya

Counting trends underscored the momentum of Shokeen’s independent strategy. After nine rounds of counting, he had already established a lead of more than 5,000 votes before pulling ahead as counting progressed further and his advantage crossed the 13,000-vote mark, ultimately defeating ABVP’s Ishu Maurya by 13,705 votes. The Vice-President contest has attracted attention as Shokeen is contesting as an Independent against candidates against major student organisations.

By securing 30,615 votes without party backing, Shokeen has become one of the four vital members of the DUSU central panel. What is more remarkable about this is that this has been achieved despite the lack of organisational support which is there for ABVP and NSUI contestants, marking a notable continuation of his student politics career from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College to the Buddhist Studies department of Delhi University.
