It is clear that Ilham Aliyev did not expect such a reaction. The arrest of Gubad Ibadoglu is becoming a serious international headache for the regime.

In its second article in a week, the world-famous Washington Post newspaper of the USA demanded Gubad Ibadoglu’s freedom and wrote about the kleptocracy and thieving power in Azerbaijan occupying our people (in the comment section of the article). He called for the release of Gubad Bey and other political prisoners in our country.

The author of this article in the Washington Post is Richard Kozlarich, the former US ambassador to Azerbaijan (1993-1997).

Richard Kozlarich is, in my opinion, the most idealistic ambassador among the former ambassadors of the United States to Azerbaijan, who stands out for his commitment to human rights. In 1994, when Aliyev’s government detained me at the September 10 rally and arrested me with that famous grenade, it was Richard Kozlarich, the US ambassador to Azerbaijan. I still remember with respect the ambassador’s principled position on my arrest. Even after leaving Baku, Ambassador Kozlarich did not forget Azerbaijan. Ambassador Kozlarich expressed his principled position, which will serve as an example to other diplomats, at all times when the reaction of the Aliyev regime became stronger. Ambassador Kozlarich did not hesitate to express his principled position this time. In his article “Kleptocracy Returns” published in the Washington Post, Gubad called for targeted sanctions against the Azerbaijani officials responsible for the illegal arrest and detention of Ibadoglu.
Ambassador Kozlarich objectively describes the repressive regime in our country and writes in his Washington Post article: “This incident (Gubad Ibadoglu’s arrest) is part of a decades-long pattern of oppression against anyone who expresses their fundamental right to criticize the autocratic kleptocracy that rules Azerbaijan.” Mr. Ambassador describes the repressions in Azerbaijan as follows: “Inventing “crimes” (in this case, currency forgery) against political opponents; forcibly arrest the “criminal”; insulting and intimidating innocent family members; waive legal representation and contact; detaining the accused in terrible prison conditions, including torture.

The Azerbaijani authorities must understand that continuing the repressions and thus deepening the conflict with the Azerbaijani people and the world community is not the way out. This aggressive and wrong policy does not bode well for the regime itself. Gubad Ibadoglu and other political prisoners should be released without delay.
