Delitzsch. On Tuesday alone, 244 people stood in line in front of the Tafel edition in Delitzsch. “244. You have to let it melt in your mouth,” says Jutta Faak. The 81-year-old founded the branch of the nationwide aid organization 18 years ago and is concerned about the current situation. She is all the more pleased that the LVZ fundraising campaign “A Light in Advent” helped with a purchase last year.

Between 3,500 and 4,000 people in Delitzsch regularly come to the food bank to get food. This time last year, Faak was still talking about 3,000 customers. “Inflation affects everyone, electricity and food are becoming more and more expensive,” says Faak. “Many people can no longer make ends meet even though they have a job. It’s no longer just citizens’ benefit or Hartz IV recipients who need support.”

Instead, she is increasingly seeing students, single parents and families with children queuing in front of Leipziger Straße 17b and the other distribution points in Eilenburg, Schkeuditz and Laußig. The situation of many pensioners is particularly worrying. “Many people can no longer make ends meet with their small pension,” says Faak. “That’s really sad and it hurts me too.”

Faak is a little worried about next year. “The grocery store has changed its ordering behavior since Corona,” she says. Often less is ordered from the producer than before. This leaves less and less left for the food banks.

“If the increase in needy customers continues like this, things will get tight. After all, our costs are also rising,” says Faak and takes a deep breath. “But we can only keep going and do our best.” After all, she has a great team at her side. “I always say: The Tafel, it’s not me, it’s my employees.”

The food donations are still enough to supply the people at the distribution points. However, volunteers are urgently needed, says Faak. Your on-site team consists of seven people. “And everyone does more than they actually have to,” she says.

The majority are of advanced age and the constant lifting of boxes is becoming increasingly difficult. “Table work – it’s a really hard job,” says Faak. Many people interested in volunteering would also notice this, but after one or more trial days they often don’t come back. Because just handing out food doesn’t mean the job is done.

“The donations must be counted and sorted by best-before date. We have to clean the vegetables beforehand. And not just for Delitzsch, the distribution points are also supplied and looked after.”

The LVZ fundraising campaign “A Light in Advent” ended last year with a great result. 35,000 euros will help the Delitzsch team led by Tafel boss Jutta Faak and volunteer Rami Zinh (middle) to tackle the biggest problems. LVZ editor Mathias Schönknecht symbolically handed over a plaque with the donation amount.

LVZ readers support Tafel Delitzsch with money for vans

To ensure that this continues to work, LVZ readers supported several food banks in the region last year. The “Light in Advent” campaign raised around 35,000 euros for the Delitzsch branch. The money was urgently needed to purchase a new van.

“Our old one was almost falling apart and we urgently had to replace it,” says Jutta Faak, looking back. The car drives several kilometers every day. To protect the drivers, it is essential that the transporter is in good working order.

“I was very happy that the new purchase was made possible thanks to the donations,” says the boss. “That helped us; the new vehicle is in use every day.” The Delitzsch food bank has a total of four vans at its disposal.

They not only supply the distribution points, but also seniors who have limited mobility and are no longer able to collect their groceries themselves. “That has also been part of it for 18 years,” says Faak. “We can’t do this without a vehicle.”

The new LVZ fundraising campaign “A Light in Advent” supports the Eilenburg multi-generational house Arche der Diakonie.

“Light in Advent”: Help for the Ark in Eilenburg

LVZ readers can help again this year. The “A Light in Advent” 2023 fundraising campaign supports the multi-generational house Arche in Eilenburg. Money is needed here primarily to look after people who need help with dealing with authorities and filling out applications. The current goal is to finance a half-day position for a social worker in the Diakonisches Werk Delitzsch-Eilenburg facility, who supports the volunteers in their work on site.
