Dell is poised to reinstate its iconic XPS laptop branding, reversing a decision made just last year to streamline its product naming conventions. The move, first reported by VideoCardz this week, suggests a recognition of the enduring value of the XPS nameplate among consumers.
Dell retired the XPS line in favor of a tiered system – Dell, Dell Pro, and Dell Pro max – to better organise its consumer and professional offerings. However, the company appears to be reconsidering that strategy.
A Swift Reversal for Dell’s Laptop Lineup
According to the report, dell showcased an updated XPS lineup during pre-briefings leading up to CES 2026. While Dell has not yet officially confirmed the return of the branding, the presentation signals a notable shift in direction.
This potential reversal follows the launch of the Dell 14 Premium and Dell 16 Premium in mid-2025. These models were explicitly positioned as successors to the XPS 14 and XPS 16,intended to carry forward the legacy of the premium line. The Dell 14 Premium and Dell 16 Premium effectively replaced the original XPS models in Dell’s portfolio.
Why the Change of Heart?
The speedy return to the XPS branding suggests Dell underestimated the brand recognition and consumer loyalty associated with the name. While the simplified naming scheme aimed for clarity, it may have lacked the aspirational appeal of the XPS line.
“The XPS brand has always represented a certain level of quality and innovation,” one analyst noted. “It’s a powerful signal to consumers, and abandoning it may have diluted Dell’s position in the premium laptop market.”
The decision to preview the new XPS models at CES 2026 indicates Dell intends to make a splash with the relaunch, likely highlighting advancements in design, performance, and features. The company is clearly betting on the XPS name to drive sales and reinforce its position as a leader in the laptop space.
