New Dental Clinic to Address Critical Healthcare Gap in South Lake Tahoe
A new dental clinic is slated to open in South Lake Tahoe on October 20, 2025, offering a vital solution to a long-standing healthcare challenge for residents, particularly those with low incomes or limited insurance coverage. The clinic, a collaborative effort between El Dorado Community Health Centers (EDCHC), Mountain Valley Health Plan, and the El Dorado County (EDC) Public Health Division, will be located at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
“Access and utilization of oral health care services during pregnancy, childhood, and throughout the lifespan is important because the consequences of poor oral health can have a lifelong impact on overall health and well-being,” stated Kyle Fliflet, El Dorado County Acting Director of Public Health. “To improve the quality of life for our South Lake Tahoe community, it is crucial to establish a local dental clinic that can serve as a dental home,” he added.
The need for accessible dental care in the South Lake Tahoe Basin has been acutely felt, especially since 2024 when the region’s sole dental provider accepting Medi-Cal insurance ceased operations. This loss left a significant void in services, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations. According to a recent assessment, nearly 20% of kindergarten students in South Lake Tahoe exhibited untreated dental cavities requiring treatment, and almost 10% needed urgent dental care in the 2023-2024 school year.
The lack of affordable and convenient dental options creates a difficult situation for many families. Parents often face a trade-off between their health, their income, and their children’s education, with long travel distances to clinics in communities like Placerville exacerbating the problem. This often results in children missing school days for appointments, hindering their academic progress.
This new clinic represents a targeted response to the urgent need for oral health services for California’s Medi-Cal recipients. Mountain Valley Health Plan, EDCHC, and EDC Public Health recognized the critical gap and forged a partnership to address it.
The clinic will alleviate both transportation and financial barriers, providing high-quality preventive and restorative dental care to the community. This initiative builds upon the existing success of the El Dorado Smiles Dental Van, a mobile service that currently brings dental care directly to schools throughout the region. The new brick-and-mortar location will serve as a permanent facility, ensuring quicker access to follow-up care for students identified through the van program.
The dental van has already demonstrated its impact, as illustrated by the case of a mother who, after struggling to find a Medi-Cal dentist, utilized the van’s services for her three sons, each requiring extensive dental work, including restorations and extractions. She even joined the cancellation list to secure additional appointments, highlighting the desperate need for consistent care.
“As the local Medi-Cal managed care plan for El Dorado County, we understand the critical need for comprehensive healthcare,” said Lizeth Granados, Chief Executive Officer of Mountain Valley Health Plan. “By investing in this partnership, Mountain Valley Health Plan will increase the availability of essential dental care for Health Plan members tailored to the needs of the community. By bridging this gap in care, we can ensure that children and adults are able to access preventative and restorative dental services, without having to travel long distances to do so.”
Funding for the project includes a $400,000 investment from the EDC Public Health Division, sourced from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, dedicated to purchasing dental equipment. Mountain Valley Health Plan is contributing a $500,000 grant to support location identification, renovations, and additional equipment purchases.
The new facility will initially feature up to seven dental stations, with the capacity to serve approximately 200 patients per month, with plans to expand to 400 patients monthly. The clinic’s location is designed with accessibility in mind, offering convenient access via bus and on foot, along with ample parking. It will be ground-level to accommodate patients with disabilities and will aim to employ bilingual staff and utilize language assistance technology to serve a diverse community.
“This collaboration between EDCHC, Mountain Valley Health Plan, and El Dorado County Public Health reflects a shared commitment to improving access to oral health care and addressing disparities in the South Lake Tahoe region,” said Caleb Sandford, Chief Executive Officer of EDCHC. “The new dental clinic will serve all age groups, including children, adults and seniors, and will be centrally located to provide easy access to local residents,” he added.
The clinic will offer a comprehensive range of services, including exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, and limited root canals for both children and adults. A Sliding Fee Discount program will be available for eligible patients, and the clinic will accept Medi-Cal Dental insurance.
