Denver Pioneers Dominate USC Trojans in Decisive 15-4 Victory
Denver’s women’s lacrosse team delivered a commanding performance, defeating the USC Trojans 15-4 on Thursday night in California. The victory was a team effort, with six different Pioneers contributing goals and a standout offensive showing from junior Olivia Ripple, who scored five goals.
Pioneers Seize Early Control
Denver established its dominance early in the contest. Within the first four minutes, Ryan Dineen and Caroline Keil found the back of the net, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Ripple extended the advantage to 3-0 at the 11-minute mark, and Keil scored again to push the lead to 4-0. The Pioneers’ defense proved impenetrable in the opening frame, forcing turnovers on USC’s initial four offensive possessions and keeping the Trojans scoreless.
Second Quarter Surge
USC managed to break through at the 12:32 mark of the second quarter, but Denver responded swiftly. Ripple’s second goal restored a five-goal cushion, and Dineen followed with a crucial man-down goal just before the shot clock expired, making it 7-1. Eva Thomsen-Marr capitalized on a free-position opportunity, and despite a USC goal to narrow the deficit to 8-3, Denver maintained control. A key save by goalkeeper Lexi Gwaku on a USC free-position attempt, coupled with late goals from Dineen and Thomsen-Marr, sent the Pioneers into halftime with a commanding 10-3 advantage.
Defensive Strength and Continued Offense
The Pioneers continued their strong play at the start of the second half, adding two quick goals to extend their lead to 12-3. While both teams experienced a temporary offensive lull during much of the third quarter, Denver’s defense continued to stifle USC’s opportunities.
Closing Strong
In the fourth quarter, Karleigh Mutch celebrated a milestone, netting her first career goal to increase the margin to 13-3. Ripple completed her impressive performance with her fifth goal of the afternoon, sealing the 15-4 victory for Denver.
Defensively, Landry Grover recorded a career-high six ground balls, and Megan Klingenberg added two caused turnovers. Gwaku finished with six saves, while Alex Dorr secured seven draw controls.
