Derren Brown Brings Only Human Show to London’s Apollo Theatre

Illusionist Derren Brown returns to London’s Apollo Theatre with his 11th West End show, Only Human, exploring free will and future prediction through a series of illusions and audience participation running through January 30, 2027.

Following a UK and Ireland tour, the five-time Olivier-nominated illusionist and mentalist brings his latest production to the West End. Co-written with Stephen Long and director Andrew O’Connor, the show takes inspiration from Nostradamus and divination techniques, weaving an exploration of free will and its impact on the future. As The Guardian notes, the production features an opening where the performer orchestrates a near-death experience for a hypnotised crowd member, echoing the famous astrologer’s own historical experiences. AOL points out that now 55, the performer retains an edge suggesting a Hannibal Lecter-like figure lurks within, though the show leans into warmth and vulnerability reminiscent of his previous stage spectacular, Showman, which was shaped around the lonely death of his father during Covid restrictions.

Simon Higlett designed the set, Charlie Morgan Jones provided lighting, and Beth Duke handled sound. Simon Wainwright created video design supporting real-time video feeds that zoom into individual spectators, even reaching those seated in the balcony level.

Stunts and Audience Interaction

An early water divination set-piece requires mass audience mobility that proves challenging within the cramped Apollo Theatre seating, with The Guardian reporting that only one of three selected dowsers was up to the task. Other routines involve predicting an audience member’s yes-or-no answers, which The Guardian describes as amazing yet low stakes. Act two increases intensity with video, booming sound, and quick set changes alongside a mind-reading number featuring photos submitted by audience members during the interval.

One extended sequence pushes theatrical boundaries to the point where some spectators may feel the need for post-show self-care. At a recent performance, a 13-year-old was selected as a participant—matching the exact age Brown was when a teacher first asked him to envision his future.

Andrew O'Connor Directs as Andy Nyman Departs

With concept and supervision by Paul Kieve, the production is presented by arrangement with Vaudeville Productions, Michael Vine, Andrew O’Connor, Paul Sandler, and Derren Brown for Only Human Productions Ltd. AOL notes a creative change: the performer’s closest collaborator over 24 years, Andy Nyman, who co-wrote and co-directed previous shows, is absent from the credits here, leaving Andrew O’Connor to direct solo. Standard tickets are priced from £25, with no rush or lottery tickets available.

The staging makes use of flashing lights, haze, full auditorium blackouts, and live camera filming. The production runs at the Apollo Theatre in London through 30 January 2027.
