Derren Brown Launches Only Human at the Apollo Theatre

British mentalist Derren Brown returns to the West End with his 11th solo show, Only Human, running at the Apollo Theatre through January 30, 2027. Co-written with Stephen Long and director Andrew O’Connor, the production blends stage magic and hypnosis in an inquiry into free will and human suggestibility.

Derren Brown has brought his latest theatrical venture to the Apollo Theatre in London following a sold-out tour across the UK and Ireland. Performances are scheduled to continue through 30 January 2027.

This run represents Brown’s return to the live stage.

It comes after an absence of upwards of three years.

That hiatus featured the 2023 show Unbelievable. During that production, he instructed a cast of actors to execute illusions instead of performing at the center himself, working alongside frequent partners Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor.

Only Human by Derren Brown is brought to audiences through an arrangement involving Vaudeville Productions, Michael Vine, Andrew O’Connor, Paul Sandler, and Derren Brown acting for Only Human Productions Ltd.

The production’s creative team features direction by Andrew O’Connor, set design by Simon Higlett, video design by Simon Wainwright, lighting design by Charlie Morgan Jones, sound design by Beth Duke, and illusion concept and supervision by Paul Kieve.

Standard ticket prices begin at £25, according to production information.

The staging utilizes flashing lights, haze, full auditorium blackouts, and live camera filming throughout the performance.

Mentalism Routines Examine Free Will

Brown weaves these philosophical themes through a sequence of mentalism and illusion routines, examining whether human choices are genuinely free or rooted in habit and history.

One routine involves shuffle tracking of playing cards. Brown has described this as one of the hardest things he does in the show.

Audio design by Beth Duke quietly heightens tension from cheeky game show voiceovers to audience microphones throughout the evening.

Video design by Simon Wainwright contributes screens embedded within the set, playful game show segment titles, and rapid graphics in the finale.

Audiences Maintain Strict Secrecy

Audiences and critics have been urged by Brown to guard the secrets of the show.

This is true to form for the five-time Olivier-nominated illusionist and mentalist, who has previously taken home two Olivier Awards for his stage work alongside several more nominations.

The production relies extensively on audience involvement, utilizing roving microphones and participatory segments that reach across the stalls and circle levels.

Other selection methods involve flying frisbees to select volunteers and waiting for a randomly selected audience member to descend from the Grand Circle or decipher convoluted instructions.
