The video, which quickly spread online on Monday, shows store personnel struggling with Carter before physically dragging her out of the premises. the footage has prompted widespread concern regarding the handling of such situations by retail establishments.
Family’s Plea for Answers and Concern for Carter’s Well-being
Faith Carter, the woman’s sister, was the first to discover the viral video and promptly alerted their mother,Mildred Thomas. “The video gets worse and worse the more you see it,” she stated, expressing her distress over the incident. Family members have revealed that Sunda Carter is currently experiencing homelessness and battles with mental illness, issues that underscore broader systemic challenges faced by vulnerable populations in Detroit.
Thomas, who is the primary caregiver for Carter’s children, shared the family’s difficulties in accessing adequate support for her daughter. The family believes the store employees’ actions were unnecessarily aggressive and possibly put carter’s life at risk.
“Yes, it is indeed wrong to steal, but they could have called the police. There are other ways to go about it,” Faith Carter explained. “This could have really escalated. She could have passed out. She could have had a heart attack.”
Seeking Accountability and Legal Options
Following the incident, Thomas visited the Family Dollar store in an attempt to gain clarification. “I need Family Dollar to reach out to me. I don’t need to reach out to Family Dollar,” she asserted, emphasizing her expectation of a proactive response from the company. The family is now considering potential legal action to address the situation.
As of Tuesday, a store employee reportedly declined to comment on the matter when contacted by Local 4. Attempts to reach Family Dollar’s media relations department have, so far, been unsuccessful.
Adding to the family’s distress, they reported being unable to locate Sunda Carter and expressed deep concern for her health and safety.
