Michigan state has tapped Pat Fitzgerald as its next head football coach, offering the former Northwestern leader a five-year,$30 million contract as the program seeks a return to prominence. The appointment comes after a tumultuous period for the Spartans, marked by a coaching change adn potential roster departures.
Fitzgerald, an All-American linebacker during his playing days at Northwestern, expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect. “It was almost a no-brainer for me when the opportunity was presented,” he stated Tuesday.
A Rocky Road to East Lansing
Fitzgerald’s arrival in East lansing follows a swift and challenging sequence of events for both himself and Michigan State. The Spartans parted ways with Jonathan Smith on Sunday, agreeing to a buyout exceeding $30 million after a disappointing 9-15 overall record and a 4-14 mark within the Big Ten conference. Concurrently, the team faces potential roster attrition, with standout receiver Nick Marsh and running back Makhi Frazier reportedly planning to enter the transfer portal.
Michigan State’s recent history has been defined by instability since the retirement of long-time coach Mark dantonio. A promising tenure under Mel Tucker, which culminated in an 11-2 season in 2021, was abruptly halted in 2023 following allegations of sexual misconduct. The program’s search for stability led them to Fitzgerald, who was himself recently embroiled in controversy.
From hazing Scandal to New Beginnings
Fitzgerald was dismissed from his position at northwestern in July 2023 amid a hazing scandal within the football program. He afterward filed a $130 million lawsuit against the university, alleging wrongful termination. A settlement was reached in August, with the school acknowledging “there was no direct evidence that Coach Fitzgerald was aware of the hazing” during its investigation.
Describing the period as deeply impactful, Fitzgerald admitted, “That knocked me down. That rocked me to the core.” He spent the intervening months on what he termed a “sabbatical,” engaging with both NFL and collegiate teams to prepare for his next coaching opportunity. “I’ve been dreaming about this day for a long time,” he said, visibly moved. “There will be no more motivated coach.”
Contract Details and Performance Incentives
the financial terms of Fitzgerald’s contract are heavily performance-based. He is guaranteed $5 million in his first year, with a minimum increase of $500,000 in each of the subsequent four seasons. The contract also includes significant bonus opportunities tied to team success.
Specifically, Fitzgerald will receive:
- A $500,000 bonus for a regular season record of six or more wins.
- An additional $1 million bonus for seven wins.
- A $1.5 million bonus for eight wins.
- An extra year on the contract and a $500,000 bonus for achieving seven wins in any of his first three seasons.
- Over $1 million in bonuses for leading the Spartans to a national championship – their first as 1952.
- $400,000 for securing a Big Ten championship, a feat the program hasn’t accomplished since 2016.
A Familiar Face in the Big ten
Athletic Director J Batt expressed confidence in the hire, stating, “Pat is an excellent fit for Michigan State football as he understands the Big Ten, has great relationships throughout the Midwest and embodies the values on which our program was built.”
Fitzgerald’s coaching record at Northwestern included a 110-101 overall record and big Ten West championships in 2018 and 2020, earning him Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2018.He also starred as a player for the Wildcats, contributing to their 1995 big Ten championship and Rose Bowl appearance.
The keen reception from Michigan State fans, including a standing ovation at the Breslin Center during a basketball game, underscored the hope that Fitzgerald can revitalize the program. Addressing the crowd,Fitzgerald implored them to amplify their support, shouting,”Let’s blow the roof off!”
