Devil May Cry Sales Surge Following Netflix Animation Release

A new wave of interest sparked by the animated Devil May Cry series on Netflix has translated into a significant boost in game sales for Capcom, with Devil May Cry 5 leading the charge. The success echoes a similar phenomenon seen with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, demonstrating the power of adaptation to reignite franchise engagement.

Capcom recently released a report detailing a “drastic increase” in sales across several Devil May Cry titles following the April 2025 debut of the Netflix animated series. Despite some initial reservations from longtime fans, the series proved immensely popular, quickly earning a renewal for a second season.

According to the report, Devil May Cry 5, released in 2019, was the best-selling Capcom game during the period, moving over 1.7 million copies. This impressive figure surpassed sales of three Resident Evil titles: Resident Evil Village (923,000 copies), Resident Evil 4 Remake (706,000 copies), and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (635,000 copies).

The renewed interest wasn’t limited to the latest installment. Capcom also reported strong sales for older titles in the franchise. The Devil May Cry HD Compilation, featuring the first three games in the series, sold 594,000 copies. Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, which includes playable characters like Vergil, Lady, and Trish, ranked seventh with 495,000 copies sold.

Notably, a game released over a decade ago outperformed a newer title. The Devil May Cry classics exceeded sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, which sold 477,000 copies in the same period. A company release described the sales of Monster Hunter Wilds as “weak” in comparison.

The success of the Devil May Cry animated series highlights the potential for transmedia storytelling to drive game sales and introduce new audiences to established franchises. The impact of adaptations like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and now Devil May Cry suggests a growing trend in the gaming industry, where animated series serve as powerful marketing tools and gateways to immersive gaming experiences.
