Ancient Ukrainian Settlement Built From Mammoth Bones Endures as Archaeological Puzzle

A groundbreaking analysis of a prehistoric site in Ukraine reveals that a structure built from the bones of mammoths was occupied for an astonishing 429 years, challenging previous assumptions about the lifestyles of early humans during the last Ice Age.

The Upper Paleolithic site of Mezhyrich, located in the Cherkasy oblast of central Ukraine, is renowned for its four remarkably preserved mammoth bone structures. These constructions, ranging in size from 12 to 24 square meters, were meticulously assembled using hundreds of mammoth bones and tusks. New research, published in the journal Open Research Europe in January 2025, focuses on a refined dating of these structures, specifically MBS 4, and offers compelling evidence that at least one served as a long-term dwelling.

“Open-air Upper Paleolithic sites in East-Central Europe offer valuable insights into human activity and biogeography during the Late Pleniglacial, a period of intense environmental change,” explained a researcher from Universiteit Leiden and colleagues. These sites, often characterized by deep sedimentary layers, contain a wealth of artifacts – stone tools, animal remains, and bone fragments – that provide clues about the environment and the people who lived there.

For decades, archaeologists have debated the purpose of these mammoth bone accumulations. Were they simply collections of bones, perhaps the remnants of hunts? Or did they represent more complex structures, serving as homes, storage facilities, or even ceremonial sites? The Mezhyrich site has been central to this discussion, known for its exceptional preservation of four mammoth bone structures (MBS 1-4). These structures were not isolated; they were surrounded by features like artifact-filled pits, hunting weapons, and workshops, suggesting a well-organized settlement.

The latest study centered on MBS 4, the only structure at Mezhyrich with well-documented artifacts within layers suitable for precise dating. By analyzing small mammal remains – rather than the mammoth bones themselves – researchers were able to establish a more accurate timeline, placing the occupation of MBS 4 between 18,248 and 17,764 years ago. This refined dating revealed the extraordinary length of time the structure was in use: up to 429 years.

This discovery fundamentally alters our understanding of Mezhyrich. Previously, it was thought to be a temporary camp, used seasonally. The new data suggests a stable, long-term settlement, a multi-generational home maintained and re-occupied over centuries. “MBS 4 dates to the harshest phase of the last Ice Age,” researchers noted, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by the people who lived there.

However, the occupation wasn’t continuous. Researchers suggest the structure may have been visited only sporadically over those centuries, perhaps used as a refuge during particularly harsh periods. “This suggests that these bone-built shelters were practical solutions for survival rather than permanent settlements,” one researcher stated.

The ingenuity of using mammoth bones as building material is remarkable in itself, but the implications of this research extend far beyond that. “Beyond the sheer ingenuity of using mammoth bones as building material, these findings reshape our understanding of human resilience and adaptation,” researchers emphasized. The findings demonstrate how communities thrived in extreme environments, transforming the remains of extinct megafauna into protective architecture.

As dating technologies become more sophisticated, sites like Mezhyrich continue to challenge long-held assumptions about prehistoric life. “Far from being static, these societies were dynamic, resourceful, and deeply connected to their environment, a lesson that still resonates today,” the researchers concluded.
