NIU’s Swoyer Named MAC Men’s Golfer of the Week After Strong Purdue Invitational Performance
A stellar performance at the Purdue Fall Invitational has earned Northern Illinois University (NIU) redshirt-freshman Devin Swoyer the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Men’s Golfer of the Week award, announced on Friday, October 17. Swoyer’s top-five finish highlights a strong showing for the Huskies as they approach the conclusion of their fall season.
Swoyer Leads NIU at Purdue Fall Invitational
Swoyer delivered a three-under par score of 213, propelling NIU to a sixth-place finish at the highly competitive Purdue Fall Invitational. Importantly, the Huskies outperformed fellow MAC rivals Toledo, Ball State, and Ohio, signaling a positive trajectory for the program. Swoyer consistently led the team, posting the lowest scores for NIU in the first two rounds on Monday, with impressive rounds of 72 and 71.
He continued his strong play on Tuesday, matching his season-low score of 70. This performance contributed to the Huskies’ six-under team score, marking their second-lowest single-round team score this fall. According to team reports, Swoyer’s achievement marks the first time a NIU freshman has secured a top-five finish in a 54-hole event since 2023.
Continued Success for NIU Golf Program
This recognition for Swoyer is the second time this season an NIU golfer has received the MAC Men’s Golfer of the Week honor. Craig Long previously earned the distinction, along with the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award, on September 26 following his victory at the Badger Invitational.
The program’s success is further underscored by the fact that Swoyer is the ninth different Huskie since 2020 to be named MAC Men’s Golfer of the Week, demonstrating a consistent level of excellence and depth within the NIU men’s golf team.
Looking Ahead: Quail Valley Collegiate
NIU will conclude its fall schedule at the Quail Valley Collegiate, scheduled for October 19-20 at the Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, Florida. This tournament will provide a final opportunity for the Huskies to compete before the winter break and build momentum for the spring season.
