Dexter Scott King, son of Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King, passed away at the age of 62 after a battle with cancer. According to a report from the King Center in Atlanta, King died at his home in California.

Scott King was born on January 30, 1961 and was only 7 years old when his father was murdered in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a human rights activist and documentary film director. He took over the management of the King Center from his mother in 1989 but had to retire shortly after due to a conflict with his family members, in 1994 he took over the management of the center which began to fade and lose its weight as a human rights center.

In 2008 he was sued by his younger sister Bernice and his older brother Martin Luther King III claiming that he exceeded their parents’ estate. In response, Dexter King filed a lawsuit for breach of trust on the part of Bernice and Martin Luther King III and their improper use of the center’s funds.

The lawsuits revealed deep rifts among the descendants of Martin Luther King Jr. and power struggles over his legacy and estate funds. In October 2009, the lawsuits were settled in an out-of-court settlement and Dexter Scott King continued to serve as the center’s chairman.
