DFB star Svenja Huth becomes a mother: “We already feel kicks”

Svenja Huth and her wife Laura decided on artificial insemination. Now the couple is talking about their shared happiness.

The DFB player Svenja Huth (32) and her wife Laura are expecting their first child together in September. As the two reveal in the ZDF documentary “Born for this – More than football” (Saturday, July 15, from 9:45 p.m. on ZDF and from 10 a.m. in the media library) as part of a sports studio report, they decided for the so-called ROPA method for artificial insemination.

“It’s a big project that we’re tackling. We decided on a method that we could only have carried out in Spain, in Valencia,” explains Laura, who will also carry the child. Egg cells were taken from her wife Svenja, fertilized outside of her body and then Laura was used. “We already notice kicks and movements from our little son. He fills us both with a lot of luck,” reports the player from VfL Wolfsburg in a joint ZDF interview.

But there are still a few bureaucratic hurdles to be overcome in Germany – especially after the birth: “In Spain, the law regulates that if we have the child there, we would both be considered mothers,” reports Laura. Unfortunately, that is not the case in Germany. So Svenja had to adopt her own child after birth, which was difficult for both of them and made her sad. It is humiliating that, as a mother, she has to take a drug test and present an extended certificate of good conduct in order to adopt her own child, Svenja continues.

“We are married, more children are not really possible. You want more equality,” Laura finds clear words. Laura and Svenja Huth said yes in June 2022 after meeting at a women’s international match in Halle. “She is the best coincidence of my life,” reports Laura, who was invited to the game by her best friend and happened to meet Svenja there after the match.

“That’s how it started. We fit together really well,” agrees the professional player. Her partner brings everything she has always been looking for: “I can really say that I have arrived.” One of her happiest ideas after the birth is that her wife could be in the stadium with their son or that she could even walk in or have him in her arms. After her active career, she also has the desire to become pregnant herself.
